An Overview

A Facilities Maintenance Specialist performs skilled work in the maintenance, repair and alteration of fixtures, equipment and building and provides supervision to skilled and unskilled maintenance employees in the performance of this work. An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of building trades tasks in accordance with verbal or written work orders which may be accompanied by sketches, penciled layouts, or blueprints. General supervision is received from a superior, but the employee is expected to perform most tasks independently.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work ( These responsibilities are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Maintenance/ Carpentry - Repair and install drywall, painting, baseboard, carpet tile, ceramic tile, grouting, ceiling tile, patch work, window and door, locks, fences, landscaping, brick work, roof work, gutter cleaning and replacing glass.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency repair calls. Assist in emergency and/or standby operations as needed.
  • Performs administrative duties including answering emails, imputing information into City Works system and communication with vendors.
  • Provide maintenance and logistical support for City sponsored events.
  • Supervise contractors in Pest Control, Electrical, Plumbing, Sprinkler Systems, Fire Extinguisher and General Contracting.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Prepares mixture of concrete and other substances according to specific directions.
  • Performs related work as required.

Preferred experience
  • Repair and install light switches, indoor and outdoor lighting, garbage disposals, water heaters, dishwashers, heat pumps, A/C units, boilers, washer and dryers, breaker boxes, and sump pumps.
  • Test, monitor and make minor repairs to building safety systems.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Considerable experience on a skilled level in several building maintenance trades; and completion of high school or vocational school-level courses; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of their residence.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree or equivalent vocational education in construction, HVAC, welding, or other maintenance trade and one year of experience OR three years’ experience in skilled maintenance, construction or mechanical trades and experience leading/directing others in such work. Must possess the ability to lift objects over 44 pound with or without accommodations; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to pull, push, reach above shoulders, repeated bending, crawling and climbing; frequent walking indoors and outdoors; ability to perform work in adverse work conditions.


This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug testing, criminal background and medical screening- Fit for Duty.

Outside of general business hours the Facilities Maintenance Specialist will be required to work evening and weekend hours on a rotational base.

The Department of General Services (DGS) is a first response department and as such all DGS employees are deemed essential or emergency personnel and maybe required to report to work when the City government is open with liberal leave or closed during emergencies.
