Senior Counsel (Senior Manager) - Business and Marketing, Premium Products & Experiences

About the Role:

In this role, you'll apply your strategic and analytical skills supporting our premium card products and experiences business. You'll be a key player on the team advising the development and evolution of premium brand products, as well as travel and lifestyle benefits, features, and customer experiences. You'll partner closely with business teammates in strategizing about new products, features and promotions, learning about and understanding the business intent, investigating and assessing the legal and business risks, and advising on initiatives to deliver value and benefits to our customers. You'll also have the opportunity to learn and partner with the bright, collaborative and dynamic group of attorneys who support the Card and Premium Products and Experiences businesses, as well as build working relationships with subject matter experts and colleagues across the Legal department. And you'll work in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insights, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.

To succeed in this Senior Manager, Senior Counsel role, you'll need strong legal and business analytical skills. Written and oral communication skills also are key, as is the ability to organize thoughts on legal risk and focus on what matters in driving business initiatives forward responsibly. It's a plus if you have expertise with consumer financial regulatory laws, marketing and advertising laws, travel or entertainment industry laws, and/or general risk management.

This position will report to a Senior Director, Associate General Counsel and will have responsibility for:

  • Identifying and assessing legal risks associated with Capital One's premium products and experiences business;
  • Translating the laws and legal requirements for the business teams and the business intent for the legal team and legal subject matter experts;
  • Actively engaging with colleagues to provide legal support as part of a collaborative and cross-functional team; and
  • Working with Premium Products & Experiences, Card, Brand, Business Risk, Corporate Communications, and Compliance stakeholders to collaborate, assess risks, develop creative solutions, and resolve issues.


This position will entail regular interactions with senior business partners, Legal Department subject matter experts, and other attorneys in a fast-paced environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency, ideally involving consumer regulatory or consumer finance experience, credit card or financial product programs or services
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and flexibility to adapt to changing needs
  • Ability to build collegial and effective relationships with attorneys, business managers, creative teams, data analysts, project managers, and corporate compliance professionals, and work cooperatively to resolve issues smoothly and quickly
  • Ability to prioritize work and to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others
