AARP Foundation Development Team seeks a creative, self-motivated, and detail-orientated intern. This intern will support the Development team and rotate between the following units: Direct Response, Corporate and Foundations Fundraising, Major and Planned Gift, and Development Operations. In addition, the intern will support fundraising activities and at least one virtual fundraising engagement event during their internship and help develop fundraising strategies and tactics. This paid internship has an anticipated start date of Summer 2023, with a potential option to continue for additional semesters.

Responsibilities

  • Create and support at least one fundraising engagement event during the internship
  • Assist and execute short-term and long-term strategies for fundraising
  • Work to build long-term strategies for donor growth and retention
  • Assist with organizing special campaigns and researching potential donors
  • Assist with major and planned giving contracts, research, and support
  • Assist with mailings and invitations
  • Provide current donors and members with information as requested

Qualifications

  • Prospective interns must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students; and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship
  • AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers; this may include those who have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivated individual who can determine and honor deadlines
  • Interest in older adults' issues
  • Strong commitment to AARP Foundation's mission and values
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Personal experience with or in nonprofit fundraising is preferred but not required
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work on multiple projects with attention to detail

  • Independent judgement and discretion requiring the employee to compare and evaluate various courses of conduct and make a decision (or recommend a decision to be made) after various possibilities have been considered.
  • In office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise


Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
