Duties

As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
  • Plan and complete work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying building plans and repairs for the Herbert C Hoover building (HCHB). Supervisor reviews complex or unusual problems of completed work for timeliness and for meeting accepted trade standards.
  • Perform repairs to doors, masonry, roofs, windows and performs carpentry and painting services as well as small asbestos abatement projects. Perform the operation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment.
  • Receives general assignments including sketches, blueprints and/ or oral instructions. Monitor room temperatures, relative humidity levels and equipment information through energy management systems and responds to problems accordingly.
  • Independently determines materials, tools, equipment, and procedures to be used, laying out work, setting up equipment in order to complete assignments efficiently with minimal supervision and for observing all on-the-job safety measures

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C and evaluated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which appears as a question in the on-line questionnaire. Applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable of the screen out are given further consideration and those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Your qualifications will be evaluated against the following screen out:
  • Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-10 without more than normal supervision. Maintenance Mechanic work consist of a combination of trades that include Carpentry, Plumbing, and Painting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, fixtures, building structures, doors, walls, windows, equipment and appliances in commercial buildings using various hand and power tools.

AND
  • A certification as an Accredited Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) is required upon one year of employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires heavy physical exertion such as climbing of ladders or scaffolds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas and lifting or carrying of heavy objects weighing 20 to 40 pounds.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
