Advancement WriterThe George Mason University, Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations, invites qualified candidates to apply for a full-time Advancement Writer position. The University Advancement division is a comprehensive development and alumni relations enterprise with a staff complement of approximately 135 full-time employees. Functional units within Advancement include development/fundraising, alumni relations, stewardship and donor relations, advancement communications, special events, gift processing, research, prospect management, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations, information systems and management, and infrastructure services.Advancement's mission is to build strong, lifelong relationships with George Mason University's alumni and constituents, while matching their philanthropic interests with the university's aspirations and priorities. Respect, service, integrity, collaboration, diversity, transparency, and creativity are the values that guide our work and culture.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.This position also offers:Potential for flexible telework and hybrid telework schedulingCompetitive salaryOutstanding benefits including:Health and life insurance, multiple industry-leading retirement plans available including state VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan, accrued paid days off per year, paid holidays, paid winter break, paid sick leave, professional development, tuition reimbursement at GMU, and employee assistance programs.Responsibilities:Reporting to the Director of Communications, Advancement & Alumni Relations, the Advancement Writer will research, write, and edit materials in support of donor relations and alumni engagement at the university, including stories, articles, annual reports, email appeals, fact sheets, white papers, etc.The ideal candidate is an outstanding writer and editor, a great communicator, an enthusiastic team player with good people skills, and able to work with a high degree of independence to produce results on deadlines.Duties Include:Write and edit print and electronic communications aimed at Mason donors, alumni, and volunteers, for Advancement website, Spirit magazine, The Scroll monthly e-newsletter, and other channels;Write columns for VIPs, event scripts, and talking points for Advancement and Alumni Relations in-person and virtual events;Write and produce electronic and print communications for donor recognition societies and high-level volunteer groups;Produce and deploy monthly e-communications through Anthology Encompass software system, as needed. Track and report on results;Conceptualize, design, and create high-impact presentations for events and meetings with donors and volunteers;Provide editorial assistance and review for all projects and products of Advancement and Alumni Relations, as needed;Craft marketing copy for a variety of channels including social media, emails, websites, and more;Maintain university style and branding standards in all materials;Collaborate with all schools and programs across Mason to write and develop fundraising campaign materials, such as web content, donor viewbooks, white papers, and cases for support;Coordinate with graphic designers, web developers, photographers, videographers, and print vendors on the production and publication of collateral materials; andContribute to all aspects of projects and responsibilities of the Advancement Communications team.Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in a relevant field such as communications, english, or journalism; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;Demonstrated relevant experience as a writer and editor of a variety of marketing communications, with examples or portfolio of prior work;Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills; andDemonstrated experience as part of communications and marketing creative teams, including writers, photographers, graphic designers, brand managers, etc.Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated relevant professional experience, typically at least three years, in communications, journalism, fundraising, or a related field, with a portfolio of relevant written work preferred;Relevant experience in a fundraising setting (e.g., university or nonprofit), strongly preferred; andSignificant experience with e-communications preferred.
