Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an experienced manager to lead its SEO team. This position requires an innovative and strategic editor who is excited about positioning our journalism to reach global audiences on search platforms.

The editor will work closely with news product and core product teams, as well as their manager, the director of optimization and news product, to identify short- and long-term opportunities to consistently diversify and drive new audiences and retain visitors to our site and app. This person will help facilitate the SEO team's work with reporters and editors to assign stories that reach and engage audiences on search platforms.

This is a key management position in the newsroom that will contribute to our daily news conversation and foster digital growth across the company.

The best candidates will be organized, communicative leaders with deep SEO and audience development experience, strong news judgment and an innovative spirit. This manager will be expected to push experimentation and empower SEO editors to find new ways to attract and engage with the next generation of Washington Post subscribers. They should be excited to amplify opportunities and lessons among the Curation and Platforms portfolio and content-creation departments across the newsroom.

This position requires experience managing audience strategy and workflows during breaking news and planned live events, as well as aptitude for building durable content strategies that keep audiences returning to The Post even on quiet news days. Applicants should be well-versed in analytics and SEO tools and on top of the latest SEO industry news.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter outlining their SEO and management experience to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 01/30/2023 will be prioritized. Address the cover letter to Bryan Flaherty, director of optimization and news product, and Coleen O'Lear, head of curation and platforms.
