Cyber Threat Hunter, Manager (Remote-Eligible)

The Cyber Hunt Team at Capital One is responsible for performing proactive detection of advanced threat actors within our network. Our analysts spend each day hunting for evidence of threat actor activity and working with engineering and security teams to improve our detection capabilities and security controls.

As a Threat Hunter, you will be responsible for continuously growing your own technical skill set, and providing technical leadership within the Cyber Hunt Team and the broader security organization. You will conduct Hunt Operations, propose and drive tactical initiatives, and have an active voice in defining the strategic direction of the team. You will represent the Cyber Hunt Team in cross-functional initiatives, and mentor and grow junior analysts.

General Responsibilities:
  • Conduct threat hunting operations in Capital One's most complex and critical environments. Analyze log data to detect active threats within the network using knowledge of the current threat landscape, threat actor techniques, and the internal network.
  • Plan and scope Hunt activities based on Threat Intel reporting, knowledge of Capital One's network, and Hunt team capabilities.
  • Perform advanced threat research to proactively identify potential threat vectors and work with engineering and security teams to improve prevention and detection methods.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams across operations, intel, and engineering to iteratively improve security controls and detection capabilities.
  • Analyze malicious code, packet capture files, and artifacts.
  • Identify gaps in logging capabilities and develop and propose strategies to fill gaps.
  • Identify and propose automated alerts for new and previously unknown threats.
  • Provide technical leadership through the complete lifecycle of a hunt operation.
  • Utilize a wide range of tools and techniques to automate repetitive hunt processes.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification
  • At least 5 years of experience with incident response, security operations, malware analysis, or threat hunting
  • At least 2 years of experience with a scripting language (Python)
  • At least 2 years of experience with threat intelligence models and application to threat hunting


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience in a security engineering or threat detection role or developing custom detections in a variety of security appliances
  • 2+ years of experience with application of data science concepts and techniques to enable advanced threat detection
  • 1+ year of experience with Red Teaming or Penetration Testing tools and techniques
  • Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) certification

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Location is New York City: $190,950 - $225,278 for Manager, Cyber Technical; $156,596 - $184,748 for Prin Assoc, Cyber Technical

Location is San Francisco, California: $202,297 - $238,665 for Manager, Cyber Technical; $165,896 - $195,720 for Prin Assoc, Cyber Technical

Remote roles in other areas of New York & California, and across Colorado & Washington: $161,847 - $190,943 for Manager, Cyber Technical; $132,699 $156,555 for Prin Assoc, Cyber Technical

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
