Reporting to the EVP, General Counsel ("GC"), the SVP provides legal counsel and guidance to the leadership of AARP and five operating subsidiaries in the areas of IP, Real Estate, Media, Innovation, Strategic Transactions, Data Privacy, Contracts, and Field Offices. The SVP manages a team of attorneys and legal staff, advises the Board and C-Suite on issues of enterprise-wide risk and compliance, oversees outside counsel work and supports the development of the Office of General Counsel.


  • Advise, structure, negotiate, and draft agreements and manage deal flow and legal execution for strategic transactions.
  • Advise Innovation team on product development, innovation initiatives, tech transactions, and startup venture capital investments.
  • Oversee negotiation and drafting for AARP print and digital media and ad sales.
  • Oversee and advise on copyright, domain, trademark, infringement and other IP and media legal issues for print publications, web content, social media platforms.
  • Oversee and advise on legal issues and agreements for owned and leased real estate portfolio.
  • Oversee and advise on day-to-day legal issues and agreements for program work conducted in AARP's 53 field offices in each state, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
  • Manage and develop team of attorneys and legal support staff.
  • Oversee data privacy compliance for AARP, AARP Services, Inc. and all other affiliates, which includes: consumer privacy rights, vendor privacy compliance, internal privacy workflows, external privacy notices, managing incident response, developing privacy program maturity, negotiating privacy contract terms, managing personal data storage policies in compliance with privacy regulations, ensuring privacy compliance for various consumer communications channels, ensuring employee data privacy compliance. Interpret new laws and application to AARP and its affiliates.
  • Advise on privacy trends, legislation, and requirements to Board, C-Suite, Advocacy and Public Policy teams.
  • Assist with managing legal services provided by outside counsel. Act as liaison with outside counsel and advisors.
  • Provide a bridge for smooth communication between the General Counsel and internal departments; demonstrating leadership to maintain credibility, trust, and support with all staff; and other duties assigned.


  • Juris Doctor degree and active membership, in good standing, to at least one state and/or the District of Columbia bar.
  • At least ten (10) years of legal practice experience, including foundational training in a law firm setting. The ideal candidate will also bring at least two (2) years of in-house practice experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience drafting and negotiating contracts and agreements also required.
  • Experience with media law as well as privacy law.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
