Principal Associate, Risk and Control Assessment

As a Principal Risk Associate at Capital One you'll be responsible for working with business partners to identify and mitigate potential risks to Capital One. Principal Risk Associates at Capital One are highly motivated Risk Management professionals with excellent organizational and communication skills. They have a high level of exposure across lines of business and have the opportunity to create and implement innovative solutions to identify and mitigate potential risks to the Company.

As a Principal Associate within the High Resolution Governance (HRG) team you will be a critical member of the Testing and Governance (TAG) team focused on providing risk and control assessments, consultations, and process modernization support for US Card Platform Operations teams. You will help lead process execution, monitoring, and innovation. You will create and modify processes while collaborating with smart and passionate leaders to influence results that have a direct impact on the company's bottom line.

The High Resolution Governance team provides risk and control support to business processes within our US Card Platform Operations team. HRG team members possess a solid understanding of process management frameworks, risk, control and testing methodology, and regulatory requirement applicability. As a team member you will partner with business process owners and key process personnel developing strong relationships to understand and assess the control environment and provide control governance support, in accordance with Capital One and Card Risk policy standards.

Your activities will include collaborating with the Lines of Business and their control environment, analyzing information and control results, advising on best practices for control governance, executing risk appropriate assessments, and driving improvements within the TAG team

General Responsibilities:
  • Proactively partner with US Card Lines of Business control owners to gain understanding of business processes.
  • Evaluate internal process and LOB control activities for compliance with Enterprise, Regulatory, and Compliance requirements.
  • Analyze process and control activities and collect evidence to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of controls within US Card Platform Operations processes.
  • Maintain an inquisitive mindset and ability to provide root cause analysis.
  • Autonomously conduct control assessment activities end-to-end. Clearly articulate obstacles, and potential solutions, while remaining flexible and agile to respond to emerging issues.
  • Create and maintain adequate testing rationale and support documentation such as workpapers, testing reports, etc. to support the result of assessments.
  • Listen, learn, and empathize with internal stakeholders to gain relevant feedback from business partners and translate feedback into actionable enhancements to our processes or communication.
  • Communicate updates with internal customers on new, trending or updated processes. Including opportunities for delivering communication, presentations, or training, peers, business partners or Executive level leaders.
  • Develop and demonstrate Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for our Enterprise, business, risk, and control environment best practices to inform and influence business partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining internal documentation, including process and assessment procedures, process maps, and other artifacts on existing and developing processes.
  • Resolve complex issues by collaborating with teammates and participating in large or small initiatives on cross-functional project teams.
  • Lead, coach, and help train fellow HRG, TAG or business process associates.


Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification.
  • At least 1 year experience in MS Office or Google Suite (Docs, Sheets) .
  • At least 1 year of Process Improvement experience or training (Lean, Six Sigma, BPM documents)
  • At least 2 years of experience in Business Process Management or Project Management or Relationship Management or Risk Management.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 4+ years of experience in Process Management, Information Technology, Project Management, Risk Management or control environment assessment.
  • 2+ years of control assessment experience.
  • 2+ years of regulatory compliance assessment experience.
  • 2+ years of advanced knowledge of database query language (SQL, coding).
  • 2+ years of Process Improvement experience or training (Lean, Six Sigma, BPM documents)
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or other business process management evaluation Certification.
