Job Announcement

Supervises one of three Forest Conservation teams comprised of 2-4 Urban Forester I's and II's within the Urban Forest Management Division. Coordinates and monitors the review of zoning cases and construction plans. Provides technical expertise on tree preservation and landscaping requirements as they relate to the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance and Tree Conservation Ordinance. Provides direction and technical expertise on County Code and vegetation related matters. Inspects construction sites for conformance with approved construction plans. Prepares written and oral responses for queries received from the Board of Supervisors, other county agencies, citizens, developers and civil engineers and others. Monitors the performance of the Urban Forester I's and II's and provides coaching and training to manage job performance levels. Implements procedures and training needed to improve program effectiveness and provide superior customer service. Participates in the development and implementation of strategic planning initiatives. Delivers training and presentations to staff, industry and community groups. Reviews, negotiates, and recommends for approval for A/E contracts. Supports tree commission projects and meetings. Assist in the implementation of the county’s tree risk assessment program. Prepares amendments to county code and land-use policies. Ensures that County and Division safety policies, programs, and initiatives are followed by all staff.

NOTE: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to hazardous weather (snow, flooding), and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field; plus three years of related experience in forestry, arboriculture or landscape architecture relating to urban forest management and /or forest management.

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Certified Arborist certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture or the ability to obtain same within one year of appointment.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

  • Must have strong customer service skills with the ability to interact in a friendly, service-oriented, and professional manner with internal and external customers.
  • Program management experience including leading teams, budget preparation, interpreting contract specifications, and mentoring, training, and coaching of staff.
  • Experience supervising a team of professionals in a deadline driven customer service-oriented environment.
  • Experience and skill in establishing and cultivating strong partnerships to advance urban forest management, including inter- and intra-agency, policy and decision maker, private sector, non-profit, and citizen partners.
  • Three or more years of experience developing, applying, and interpreting state laws, and county codes, policies and ordinances related to urban forest management.
  • Three or more years of technical expertise and experience in communicating and resolving highly complex land development issues among stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of the science, principles, and practices of urban forest management, including forest pest management.
  • Advanced knowledge of the ecosystem service values of the urban forest, the current science, and methods of quantifying these services, and experience in communicating these values to the public.

Ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to traverse rough terrain.
Ability to operate motor vehicle. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
