The English Learner (EL) Curriculum Specialist is responsible for developing, differentiating, and refining English language development (ELD) curricula, providing expertise, leadership, support, and training to principals, teachers, and central office personnel, and collaborating with school-based and central office personnel to optimize EL student access to the ACPS general curriculum to improve academic achievement and language acquisition for all ACPS EL students.

The EL Curriculum Specialist will report to the Executive Director of the EL Office. S/he is primarily responsible for ELD curriculum design, development, and refinement, collaborating with the content area curriculum instructional specialists to ensure differentiated curricula for EL students at varying English language proficiency levels and providing professional learning to educators on the implementation of ACPS curricula. This individual will be knowledgeable in differentiating input, process, and product for students at varying English language proficiency language levels and the instructional practices which engage EL students in general classroom settings. S/he will have a high level of knowledge about research-based instructional strategies, second language acquisition, the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards, and experience with modeling, coaching, mentoring, and providing professional development. The EL Curriculum Specialist will have implemented high-quality instruction as a practitioner, have excellent writing skills, be capable of managing multiple tasks, and work well with diverse groups of people.

Note: This is an 11 month/216 day position

Qualifications

Education: Master's degree

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education License or eligibility to obtain one with an endorsement in ELL/ESL.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five years of educational leadership experience in curriculum design and implementation, professional development, and teaching.
  • Demonstrated expertise in curriculum design, curriculum writing, and differentiation for input, process, and product.
  • Demonstrated expertise as a staff developer, promoting teacher and administrator understanding of best practices and strategies for ELL students.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning, WIDA English language proficiency standards, and aligned assessments.
  • Knowledge of instructional frameworks, strategies, and practices to promote language acquisition.
  • Knowledge of the latest research and promising new practices that address the needs of EL students.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and interpersonal relationship skills are necessary to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and central office personnel.
  • Successful teaching experience in a culturally diverse community.


Essential Functions:
  • Design and write English language development curricula for use with EL students.
  • Collaborate with the content curriculum instructional specialists to ensure differentiation of input, process, and product of the ACPS general curriculum for EL students at varying English language proficiency levels.
  • Identify texts, materials, and other resources for teacher use to support access to the ELD and general ACPS curricula for EL students.
  • Support school-based principals and teachers of EL students to improve academic achievement and language acquisition for EL students.
  • Provide high-quality, ongoing staff development to teachers of EL students, integrating differentiation and best practices and strategies.
  • Collaborate with school-based teachers and administrators, Curriculum and Design Office specialists, the Talent Development Office, the EL Office staff, and others as required.
  • Analyze, interpret and utilize data to inform decision-making in adapting curricula and providing professional learning on ACPS curricula.
  • Demonstrate excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Clearances:
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
