The Washington Post Opinions department has an immediate opening for two visual journalists with strong front-end developer, multimedia and data visualization skills to join its award-winning visuals team. The ideal candidates are thoughtful journalists who can flourish in a fast-paced environment and bring creativity to a project from its early stages while collaborating to develop a vision for how the experience can be shaped across our many digital platforms.

Responsibilities:
  • Conceives and generates powerful visual storytelling.
  • Keeps up with technological changes and continually looks for ways that we can innovate.
  • Brings creativity to projects from conception through publication.
  • Collaborates across teams to help shape pieces across our many digital platforms, including social media.
  • Provides feedback on colleagues' work. This includes charts and maps created by editors and columnists in Datawrapper to ensure that their visual solutions are adequate, accurate and clear.
  • Participates in the daily, weekly and longer range planning for the department.


Qualifications:
  • You have three or more years of visual journalism experience, including reporting and designing stories with charts and multimedia or interactive components.
  • You're an expert in using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to elevate our storytelling with meaningful interaction and appealing design.
  • You know how to build interactive data visualizations with D3.js, or have strong digital QGIS and digital cartography skills, or create 3D scenes with Three.js.
  • Knowing how to develop with React.js and Next.js would be a plus. (React is the base of most of our code at The Post.)
  • You possess good knowledge of the technical and UX nuances of digital platforms and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
  • You have at least one or two other specialties preferred, which might include data visualization, cartography, 3D, animation or illustration.


This position reports to the design director and is not eligible for remote work.
