Director, Data Governance - Ontology and Data Modeling

The Director of Data Governance, Ontology and Data Modeling will be responsible for defining and leading the execution of data governance strategies across Commercial Bank. They will assist in creation and execution of the vision and strategy oversight of the data standardization (ontology and modeling) program in partnership with the Enterprise. This role will focus on the delivery of data products and data assets that will support low latency use cases with a focus on its quality and shared ownership for the data.

This role will be responsible for building and maintaining a high-performing team of data stewards who will be responsible for data management capabilities for a given line of business. This role will develop and maintain strong partnerships with various business and technical stakeholders. This role will be responsible for helping design data governance frameworks and practices to ensure standardization, ontology and modeling requirements are met. They will establish and implement processes for validating and adhering to data standards, product tooling and program goals.

This role will need to operate at both strategic and tactical levels and successfully execute in a dynamic and fluid environment.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Drives the vision, strategy, roadmap and execution for data governance encompassing standardization and ontology modeling across CML in partnership with the enterprise, CML stakeholders and technology teams.
  • Leads the governing body to establish priorities for data products, setting and enforcing policies, driving measurable progress for standardized data that is shared across CML supporting each LOBs goals/business outcomes.
  • Immerse yourself in knowing your internal and/or external customer(s) by employing empathy and design thinking to define broad-scale semantic solutions that provide breakthrough leverage
  • Model adaptability by encouraging continuous evolution to semantic strategy in light of industry trends, emerging solutions, new insights and changing customer and business needs
  • Learn the financial drivers, externalities, and points of leverage within your domain to identify new solutions or enhancements that drive sustainable value for Capital One
  • Promote a culture anchored in data, used to model reality of intent and usage, validate outcomes, drive insights, and manage the business both tactically and strategically
  • Partner with Technology leaders to influence end-state architecture and drive secure, resilient, performant and scalable technology solutions that solve material customer and business problems
  • Govern the responsible and efficient application of technology and modeling resources by assessing opportunities for reusing existing solutions, clearly defining minimum viable products, and always building/modeling with extensibility in mind
  • Partner with the enterprise to establish a long-term Semantics portfolio strategy for CML, informed by customer and business needs, and partner with leaders and stakeholders to regularly drive alignment, secure resources and overcome impediments.
  • Attract, grow, empower, and inspire top Ontology and Data Modeling talent as they develop and deliver on their local strategy in an iterative, outcome-focused and well-managed way

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics
  • At least 8 years' experience in a metadata field of work (ontology, taxonomy, semantics or computational linguistics)
  • At least 8 years' experience or training in using W3C standards including linked and canonical data and ontologies ( JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, and SKOS)
  • At least 4 years' experience or training in ontology and linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, or Data.World)


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or PhD in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics
  • 5+ years of experience in a data governance leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of data management practices such as: data integrity, metadata management, data security/privacy and master data management
  • Established leadership ability with proven experience influencing others to drive change management, consensus building, and adoption
  • Experience with large scale data programs, standardization and ontology
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills at all levels of the organization

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Location is New York City

- $220,987 and $260,715 for Director, Ontology and Data Modeling

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
