Tour of Duty: Tuesday - Saturday, 2-10:30 pm

*The incumbent of this position is designated as "Emergency/Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather conditions.*

This position is located at Fort Meade, MD; however, periodic travel to Washington, DC or Culpeper, VA may be required.

Duties quoted at the WG-11;

A/C System Maintenance and Repair
  • Operates, maintains and troubleshoots malfunctions in equipment and systems using various testing techniques and equipment. Locates the source or cause of malfunction and determines the repairs or adjustments needed. Installs and removes associated supply, return and exhaust ducts. Lays out and designs routing, placement types, size and gauge. Installs and adjusts dampers in accordance with industry standards. Adjusts, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots air-conditioning equipment. Replaces filters, performs and documents daily logs.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance functions on building systems (i.e. chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and pumps).
  • Adjusts, maintains, repairs and troubleshoots electronic and Direct Digital Controls (DDCs). These include, among others, DDC control systems on air handlers units, electronic dampers, electronic valves, variable speed drives and Variable Air Volume systems.

Electrical Maintenance, Repair and Troubleshooting (25%)
  • Installs, modifies, operates, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment. Works with secondary power distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase and frequency requirements to distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits; industrial multiphase systems; thermocouple sensors; fire alarm systems; emergency warning systems; lighting protection systems; high intensity lighting systems with associated controls; AC and DC rectification systems; and related electrical equipment.
  • Operates, maintains, replaces and troubleshoots variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Places boxes, connections, distribution panels and fittings and installs conduits, couplings, electrical service entrances, fixtures, wiring, relays and transformers. Troubleshoots electrical systems for sufficient power and repairs circuits as required.
  • Maintains, insulates, removes, splices, solders, replaces and tightens defective controls, equipment and fixtures. Locates defective points and equipment using test equipment and by visual observation. Maintains, installs and/or repairs electrical circuits and equipment during the construction, maintenance or renovation of buildings, offices and workshops. Installs and repairs alternators, breaker boxes, controllers, converters, generators, inverters, motors, power panels and transformers. Makes repairs to installed systems. Relocates and connects circuit breakers, outlets, light fixtures, and switches. Replaces lamps, light fixtures and ballasts.
  • Operates and performs weekly generator maintenance.

Plumbing System Repairs
  • Uses blueprints, building plans and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall and proper operation of feed and drain systems and equipment. Installs new systems, modifies and repairs existing utility, supply and disposal systems.

Fire Protection Systems
  • Performs monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Inspects, operates and maintains the building fire alarm detection/notification system. Impairs and restores system alarm points warranted by work project requests and maintenance and renovation completion status.
  • Performs troubleshooting and repair to fire alarm devices.
  • Inspects and maintains sprinkler system fire and booster (jockey) pumps to confirm that proper system pressure is available. Troubleshoots and repairs fire pump motor controls and electrical control systems. Performs weekly fire pump churn testing.


Environmental Waste Management
  • Based on duties assigned, employees may require knowledge of hazardous (e.g. lead paint and solvents), universal (e.g. lamps and batteries, and/or non-hazardous (e.g. oil and polychlorinated biphenyl) waste management requirements to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in performance of duties (e.g. decide hazardous material is no longer needed and will be disposed, select containers for waste accumulation, add waste to containers, label containers, move waste to and from waste accumulation sites, manage waste accumulation sites, provide waste management guidance/answer questions concerning waste management.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to perform work in mechanical trade occupations without more than normal supervision; specifically, air-conditioning, electrical, plumbing and fire sprinkler work.
