Department of Mechanical EngineeringMultiple Open Rank, Term Faculty PositionsThe George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), invites applications for one or more renewable-term, non-tenure-track positions at the academic rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, or at the rank of Instructor, beginning Fall 2023. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching core undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering, developing electives in accordance with their area of expertise, providing academic advising to a subset of ME undergraduate students, and mentoring one or more senior design teams, along with service duties associated with the department's degree programs.Required Qualifications:Applicants for the position of Assistant/Associate or Full Professor must have received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field by the start date of the position. Applicants who have received an MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field by the start date of the position will be considered for Instructor positions. Applicants should possess a strong commitment to and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Applicants at the rank of Associate or Full Professor must have interests in outreach, curriculum development, and significant experience in an academic setting in teaching for at least five years post-PhD.Preferred Qualifications:Applicants in all areas of mechanical engineering will be seriously considered. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach an array of classes in the sub-areas of thermal-fluids engineering, dynamical systems and controls, although the successful candidate may be asked to teach classes in more than one area. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD in mechanical engineering, teaching experience at the college or university level, and experience mentoring design teams. The Department and the College place a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply.About the Department:The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Mason is a relatively young department, having received accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, retroactive to October 1, 2015. The department currently offers both a BS degree and a minor in mechanical engineering, an aerospace concentration, a graduate certificate in naval ship design, and a PhD program through the Dean's office. The department has a significant presence at both the Fairfax and SciTech (Manassas) campuses. Term faculty are instructional faculty within the department and the appointments are renewable. With high value placed on innovation and excellence in instruction, term faculty are viewed as master educators within the Department. The department currently has 16 faculty, 5 of which are term faculty and an undergraduate student population of approximately 400 students.
