Recruits, screens, trains, and evaluates volunteer interpreters. Maintains the calendar of scheduled interpreter services and troubleshoots issues that arise on a daily basis. This position reports to the Language Access Program Manager; specific duties include:
  • Monitors the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Appointment Calendar (JDAC) system for new interpretation requests and processes interpreter requests from all sources in a timely manner.
  • Contacts vendors to arrange paid interpreters when volunteer interpreters are not available for on-site assignments.
  • Assists with training for Volunteer Interpreter Program (VIP) volunteers for equipment training, court room protocol, modes of interpretation and state certification practices and other needed training.
  • Monitors volunteer performance and maintains volunteer personnel records.
  • Conducts customer satisfaction surveys of volunteers and agency staff.
  • Prepares and submits reports to the Program Manager on volunteer activity, trainings, support provided, benefits to clients and/or agency programs.
  • Serves as back up Spanish interpreter for last-minute appointments and is the back up for the Administrative Assistant III in vendor billing reconciliation.
  • Prepares presentations as assigned and formally recognizes volunteer contributions through organization of volunteer appreciation events and awards.
Note: The salary offer for the position will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($51,873.74 to $69,164.99) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”)
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences, liberal arts, education or personnel administration; plus, one year of professional volunteer services coordination experience, including recruitment, selection, and/or placement of volunteers.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.
  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and child protective services registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years’ experience in volunteer coordination.
  • Outreach and recruitment experience.
  • Ability to supervise volunteers effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills. Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Experience in reconciling invoices and working with vendors.
  • Direct experience working in a court setting or an organization that has a close connection with the criminal justice system.
  • Experience using the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Appointment Calendar (JDAC)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with the Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters Serving in Virginia Courts.
  • Must have good written and verbal fluency in Spanish and English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties are generally sedentary, performed in an office and courtroom environment. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor and the incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment. Must be able to communicate clearly both in person and over the telephone. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
