Fairfax County’s Wastewater Management Program is a nationally recognized Utility of the Future and its wastewater treatment plant, the 67 million gallon per day Noman M. Cole Pollution Control Plant, is a multi-year NACWA Platinum Award winning facility. The Wastewater Management Program is seeking an engineer with a passion for the environment to provide daily, long term, and new technology/pilot process engineering. The process engineer will work with a variety of disciplines and backgrounds both in the office and in the field.

The Process Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Providing daily and long-term process engineering to ensure compliance with the facility’s environmental water and air permits;
  • Troubleshooting and optimizing operating parameters and process performance including reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Working closely with the operations group to implement process recommendations in the plant;
  • Providing subject matter expertise during design and construction of the facility’s capital improvement program

Position may be underfilled as a Engineer II the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Engineer II (Grade S24, $62,693 - $104,489). The employment standards for the Engineer II are: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus one year of professional experience in the appropriate engineering field. Upon completion of an underfill agreement (which will require that the employee meet the employment standards stated above in addition to obtaining competencies defined by the hiring agency) the employee will be elevated to the level of Engineer III. Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Engineer III within two years of the job announcement's closing date.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driver's license check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful applicant must be highly motivated; possess the skills necessary to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment; organized, and detail oriented as it relates to regulatory compliance. Other preferred qualifications include:
  1. Experience ensuring compliance with and knowledge of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act and associated federal and state regulations as they relate to wastewater facilities,
  2. Process, maintenance, and/or and operational experience and/or knowledge relating to large scale (>35 MGD) advanced wastewater treatment plants, and
  3. Outstanding oral and written communications skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to write, communicate, and perform process inspection and evaluations in the field; and perform engineering analysis and pc work. Must be able to walk, climb stairs and 28 ft ladders. Ability to work in diverse weather. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
