Job Announcement

Member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors seeks a highly motivated individual for the position of Communications Aide. The Communications Aide supports the Supervisor’s efforts to serve as an advocate for the jurisdiction’s neighborhoods, solve problems for constituents, promote policy initiatives, and effectively manage county government.

Responsibilities include development and implementation of a multi-faceted communications strategy, including drafting regular newsletters, managing social media channels and developing digital content, drafting public statements and talking points, and responding to constituent requests.

While expertise in these areas is not a prerequisite, this position includes environmental and park-related issues in its portfolio.

Salary: $56,500 - $75,000 Annually, negotiable and commensurate with education and experience.

Illustrative Duties

  • Serves as point of contact for members of the news media and other relevant community organizations;
  • Drafts and posts content for social media, including graphics;
  • Manages a robust E-Newsletter program by crafting a weekly newsletter that contains relevant and timely community information, county resources, and neighborhood updates;
  • Compiles and drafts regular content for outside organizations’ websites, statements, and press releases;
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and develops language for 2-3 direct mail pieces a year;
  • Coordinates and staffs the Supervisor for interviews and press events;
  • Updates the Supervisor’s website at fairfaxcounty.gov;
  • Responds to constituent concerns by connecting constituent with the appropriate office or resource;
  • Builds and maintains relationships with neighborhood and community organizations as well as county staff;
  • Provides administrative and technical support to board member and staff;
  • Researches, organizes and maintains legislative and other materials for board member and staff;
  • Drafts and/or edits written materials, such as correspondence and summaries of information for public dissemination;
  • Assists in planning various aspects of special projects and essential programs, to include coordinating meetings;
  • Sets up, monitors, records, and provides staff assistance for meetings, including some evening and weekend meetings;
  • Tracks issues of concern and provides updates to board member and staff;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to write, edit and design for departmental publications; ability to write for multimedia; ability to supervise projects; knowledge of appropriate standards and formatting for online media; knowledge of, or ability to learn and utilize, email communications programs and website editing tools.
  • Knowledge of techniques and practices of research methodology, data collection, and preliminary analysis; report and memorandum writing; application and use of basic statistics; and interview techniques sufficient to obtain information related to administrative matters.
  • Ability to collect, compile and analyze data; understand and explain laws, regulations and policies governing program operations; use and understand common database, spreadsheet and word processing applications.
  • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, and constituents; understand program objectives in relation to departmental goals and procedures; organize and prioritize work assignments.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Bachelor's degree in communication, business administration or a related field, plus one year of experience in communication area of specialization.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Must possess, or be able to obtain, a notary public license from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must demonstrate drive, integrity and enthusiasm, and willingness to learn and improve;
  • Previous communications and public service experience;
  • Familiarity or knowledge with Fairfax County;
  • Ability to multitask, work independently and quickly change priorities;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills;
  • Foreign language ability highly desirable.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process.   • Due to the scope and responsibilities associated with the position, the appointee must be willing and able to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is primarily sedentary; may require lifting up to 15 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
