Duties

As a Geographer within the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Processes and analyzes remotely sensed imagery and geospatial data using GIS and image-processing software and creating graphic representations in the form of geospatial datasets, digital maps, or other products.
  • Uses GIS and remote sensing software to develop methodologies and products to support assessments of changes in coastal land cover and geomorphology, assisting in the automation of GIS tasks through scripting or other tools.
  • Performs fundamental vector and raster analysis; GIS software; Esri ArcGIS.
  • Creates land-cover databases from aerial or satellite imagery.
  • Assists processing, analysis, and publication of data and development of interpretative products for inclusion in presentations or manuscripts.
  • Presents results of spatial analyses as maps, tables, or graphics.
  • Participates in infrequent field work to collect and validate geospatial data related to changes in coastal land cover and geomorphology.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands: Work of the position requires field work entailing physical effort such as walking over rough terrain, climbing on landforms to place equipment, or walking on wet or slippery surfaces. Field work may take place in adverse weather conditions.

Work Environment: Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow; hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding; or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets.

    Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.
  • Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
  • A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.   • GS-09:
    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

    1. Master's or equivalent graduate degree in geography or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in geography or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

    **OR

    2. One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of GS-9 experience may include: (1) experience performing analyses using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS, (2) experience processing remotely sensed imagery using established image-analysis methods and workflows, (3) experience using image-processing software such as ERDAS Imagine or ENVI to create land-cover datasets from aerial or satellite imagery, (4) experience using programming languages such as Matlab or Python to run existing processing scripts to automate analysis of spatial data, and (5) experience representing results of spatial analyses as maps, tables, or graphics with supporting text.

    GS-11:
    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

    1. Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in geography or other directly related field of study or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. in geography or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

    **OR

    2. One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of GS-11 experience may include: (1) experience performing complex analyses using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS, (2) experience modifying established or developing new image-analysis methods and workflows, (3) experience developing and applying batch-processing workflows in image-processing software such as ERDAS Imagine or ENVI to create and assess the accuracy of land-cover datasets from aerial or satellite imagery, (4) experience using programming languages such as Matlab or Python to modify existing or develop new processing scripts to automate analysis of spatial data, and (5) experience preparing maps, tables, graphics, and text for inclusion in presentations, reports, or scientific papers.
