Duties

As a Supervisory Nurse, you will:
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing in defining and interpreting the overall purpose of nursing and implement the planning in accordance with the philosophy and mission of the Home.
  • Work closely with the providers, nursing staff, team members, unit clerk and the unit manager to assure a coordinated approach towards Resident care.
  • Ensure that all Nursing Service personnel follow individual job descriptions. Direct day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.
  • Participate in determining shift staffing requirements, employee performance evaluations and making recommendations to the Director of Nursing concerning employee dismissal, transfers, and promotions.

  • Qualifications

    You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

    Specialized experience for the GS-12 is defined as one year of experience at the GS-11 level, or equivalent that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

    Specialized experience is defined as:
    - Supervising a clinical staff, including nursing personnel and support staff; AND
    - Monitoring healthcare services to ensure quality care and accordance with medical and nursing guidelines and regulations.


    AND

    Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

    AND

    Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link) , Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link) , Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link) , or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

    SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.

    Education

    Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions .

    Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    - A one year probationary period may be required.
    - A one year supervisory or managerial probationary period may be required
    - Must successfully complete a background investigation.
    - Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency
    - If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.

    - Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9 . Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
    - Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
    - Pass a pre-employment physical examination. An OF-178 , Certificate of Medical Examination will be required if selected for this position. DO NOT SUBMIT AT TIME OF APPLICATION.
    - Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program.
    - Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
    - Shift Work: If needed, shift work will be required.
    - Daily activities require regular and recurring periods of walking, bending, lifting, stooping, and repositioning patients, if necessary. In addition, the duties include the carrying of such items as books, papers, and files, which range in weight from 5 pounds up to 45 pounds. Utilization of appropriate body mechanics is mandatory.
    - Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
