Duties

  • You will be responsible for radiological protection in assigned areas of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).
  • You will conduct evaluations and calculations associated with low-energy x-ray machines and radioactive materials.
  • You will conduct the Laboratory's personnel and environmental dosimetry programs by meeting the requirements of NAVMED P-5055 (or most recent regulatory update).
  • You will monitor the quality control and activities of the counting room.
  • You will conduct inspections and surveys of the Laboratory's laser equipment, classify and label all lasers according to their hazards, and report hazardous conditions to the supervisory health physicist.
  • You will perform and inventory of radiofrequency (RF) and microwave equipment possessed at NRL (including field sites) as required.
  • You will ensure all programs comply with appropriate Federal, State, Navy, and NRL regulations.

  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of research supporting combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.


Qualifications

For NP-02: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NP-01 pay band (GS-01/02/03/04 equivalent) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) use of various complex pieces or radiation detection, measuring, and assaying equipment; 2) performing tests and calibrations of analytical equipment used in the radioassay program, as well as analyzing radioactive samples; and 3) effectively communicating orally and in writing.

For NP-03: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NP-02 pay band (GS-05/06/07/08/09/10 equivalent) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) demonstrated experience with principles, equations, and nomograms contained in NPRC 144 (Radiation Protection for Particle Accelerator Facilities), 147 (Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-Ray Imaging Facilities), 151 (Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Megavoltage X and Gamma-ray Radiotherapy Facilities) and NBS Handbook 97 (Shielding for High-Energy Electron Accelerator Facilities) ; 2) use of various complex pieces or radiation detection, measuring, and assaying equipment; 3) performing tests and calibrations of analytical equipment used in the radioassay program, as well as analyzing radioactive samples; and 4) effectively communicating orally and in writing.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Basic Requirements:
  • Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

    or
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
  • After meeting the basic education requirement above, the following may be substituted in lieu of the specialized experience:
    NP-02:
    - 120 credits or a 4-year course of study in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

    NP-03:
    - 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree
