Duties

  • You will be responsible for execution of research, development, test, and/or evaluation activities across one or more Laser Weapon System (LWS) components, subsystems, or systems, such as laser source design and thermal management systems.
  • You will be responsible for execution of laser source design/characterization, atmospheric modeling and analysis, beam conditioning and control, optical system design, laser system modeling and simulation, high energy power and conditioning systems.
  • You will execute technical analysis, design, and prototyping efforts directed toward the development of effective Laser Weapon Systems (LWSs) in one or more of the following areas: laser source design and thermal management systems.
  • You will execute atmospheric modeling and analysis, beam conditioning and control, optical system design, laser system modeling and simulation, high energy power and conditioning systems and thermal management systems.
  • You will apply sound engineering and scientific principles to one or more Laser Weapon System (LWS) development efforts.
  • You will be a part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel to develop technical products.
  • You will participate in LWS development activities across the system lifecycle, including requirements definition, system design, trade analyses, prototyping, developmental testing, platform integration, and fielding.
  • You will interface with systems engineering, technical experts, configuration management, and customers to clarify tasking, identify problems, suggest changes, and develop and document final solutions.
  • You will provide subject matter expertise in your assigned technical area(s).
  • You will develop technical reports, briefings, conference papers, and systems engineering technical review (SETR) artifacts.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-03 (GS-09-11 equivalent) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Conducting analytical investigations using the scientific method to develop Laser Weapon Systems (LWSs) to support the U.S. Navy's surface warfare weapons proliferation initiative.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
