*Job description for Director of Legal Advocacy*The IMLA Director of Legal Advocacy (DLA) should have at least 3 years of experience in local government law and/or appellate law and must be willing to help advance IMLA's mission and support IMLA's team. The DLA must have excellent oral and written communication skills. The DLA must be organized, proactive, reliable, and have strong attention to detail. Travel is required for this position including for the IMLA Conference and Seminar, but also to give presentations to stakeholders around the country.The individual's primary responsibilities will include:* Leading IMLA's legal advocacy program by tracking cases at the Supreme Court and in federal and state appellate courts that are relevant to local governments and drafting memoranda related to same for stakeholders;* Providing educational services for IMLA and other stakeholders on the Supreme Court and other relevant federal court cases including through in-person presentations, webinars, and written materials;* Working with pro bono authors on amicus briefs at the Supreme Court and in federal and state appellate courts on issues of national importance to local governments and providing and coordinating feedback between relevant stakeholders and the authors;* Researching and drafting portions of _amicus curiae _briefs including before the US Supreme Court and federal circuit courts;* Spearheading IMLA's conference planning for in person events by working with IMLA's program planning committee and creating the program for the events and finding relevant speakers;* Coordinating working groups related to specific local government subject matters;* Responding to members' requests for research services;* Helping with content for IMLA's Municipal Lawyer magazine by drafting articles for the bi-monthly publication;* Traveling to and assisting with tasks associated with IMLA's in person annual conference and mid-year Seminar; and* Generally assisting with other tasks related to the advancement of IMLA's membership services mission.The ideal candidate will possess his or her juris doctorate and have at least three years of experience as an attorney in local government law, appellate law, or in one of the areas of practice within local government law (eg, constitutional law, Section 1983, employment law, land use, telecommunications, etc.). Appellate law experience is a plus but not a pre-requisite. The candidate should be independent, reliable, and able to communicate effectively both in writing and orally and should be member/customer service oriented.IMLA is a non-profit, non-partisan professional organization consisting of over 2,500 members. The membership is comprised of local government entities, including cities, counties and subdivisions thereof, as represented by their chief legal officers, state municipal leagues, and individual attorneys. IMLA serves as an international clearinghouse of information and cooperation on municipal matters. IMLA's mission is to advance responsible development of municipal law through education and legal advocacy.Salary commensurate with experience and on par for similar small non-profit organizations and generous benefits offered. Some travel is required. Full-time telework is available but the candidate must be able to come to the Rockville, Maryland office on occasion.
