The vision for CASBBI is to explore new ways to enable all people to fully participate in needed and desired life roles and activities. CASBBI researchers focus on transdisciplinary research questions of major public health and societal significance such as chronic pain, substance misuse and addiction, autism spectrum disorders, and mobility impairments. Recognizing that disability is characterized by dysfunction in multiple inter-related systems across physical biological and psychosocial domains, CASBBI brings together experts in neuroscience, physics, engineering, psychology and rehabilitation to create translational innovations. CASBBI faculty currently have over $17 million of active federally-funded research grants that has nearly doubled since the center's inception. The core methodological expertise is in multiscale neuromodulation and neuroimaging, human machine interactions, and sensorimotor integration and human movement. The core facilities include shared research instrumentation, core imaging facilities, shared wet and dry lab facilities on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. Many CASBBI researchers have state-of-the-art laboratory space in the Peterson Health Sciences Building.In addition to research, CASBBI operates a graduate training program that brings graduate students from multiple disciplines to work closely together with community partners. Trainees gain interdisciplinary skills in data science, sensing, and imaging; and engage in participatory design with community stakeholders to create data-driven solutions that enable individuals to participate fully in needed and desired life roles and activities.About the Position:The successful candidate will be a key member of the leadership team of a vibrant and thriving community of faculty, trainees and external stakeholders that are engaged in transdisciplinary research and scholarship programs. Also, the candidate will play a major role in continuing to develop the overall vision of transdisciplinary research and scholarship at CASBBI, and substantially growing the base of research and philanthropic support to take the center to the next tier. There will be plenty of opportunities for the successful candidate to be directly involved in research and scholarship activities at the Center.Responsibilities:Specific responsibilities include:Research Development:Develop strategic vision for CASBBI research informed by needs assessment based on conversations with internal and external (national and international) stakeholders;Develop new use-inspired research proposals aligned with federal funding initiatives;Develop interdisciplinary and use-inspired research capacity at Mason; andDevelop consortia with external (local, national and international) organizations around shared research goals.Research Project Management:Lead ongoing research projects, including developing research protocols and clinical study protocols in collaboration with CASBBI faculty;Project management of ongoing projects, including working closely with collaborators to ensure projects are on track to meet milestones;Develop manuscripts and other research products; andPresent research results at national and international conferences.Mentoring and Outreach:Mentor graduate and undergraduate students associated with CASBBI research and educational initiatives;Develop STEM outreach activities to increase representation of persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM research and education; andDevelop and teach courses as needed.Required Qualifications:The ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic and energetic individual who is a problem solver at heart, comfortable working in highly interdisciplinary research settings, has high-level relationship building skills and excellent communication skills, and has experience developing and implementing research development or support programs. Additionally:A terminal degree (PhD) in a science, engineering or clinical field such as neuroscience, bioengineering, psychology, rehabilitation science or similar;Exceptional oral, written, interpersonal and organizational skills; and3-5 years of experience working in interdisciplinary teams and supporting team science.Preferred Qualifications:At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in a science, engineering or clinical field such as neuroscience, bioengineering, psychology, rehabilitation science or similar;Experience in project management;Experience working with a range of stakeholders including industrial partners and community partners;Experience with research proposal development;Experience working in an academic research environment; andExperience with graduate training programs.Mason Engineering: The Future of Engineering is HereThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and the School of Computing.
