Biomedical Imaging LaboratoryUltrasound Research EngineersThe George Mason University Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (BMIL), within the College of Engineering and Computing, seeks proactive, organized, and self-reliant Research Engineers (multiple positions) with experience in diagnostic ultrasound imaging, sensor electronics and instrumentation, and signal processing. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:Candidates will support multiple federally funded research projects focused on developing wearable ultrasound sensors, validating new imaging techniques for assessing musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain, and creating ultrasound-based interfaces for controlling powered prosthetic devices. We are looking for a candidate who possesses strong technical skills, values entrepreneurship, is strongly motivated, and has a passion for delivering immediate impact to patients in need. Our interdisciplinary research team is based at the Center for Adaptive Systems of Brain Body Interactions. Ongoing projects bridge multiple disciplinary areas including bioengineering, neuroscience, psychology, and rehabilitation through extensive collaborations. Our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and research platforms for imaging (ultrasound, MRI, near infrared spectroscopy), neuroscience (multichannel EEG, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, transcranial Doppler), as well as clinical research facilities for cardiovascular, neurosurgery and rehabilitation research applications through our clinical partners. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to get involved in research projects with one or more of these collaborating centers.Responsibilities:Candidate will support complex, fast-paced, milestone-driven projects drive continued rapid growth and execution of the expanding research portfolio of BMIL. At the core we are looking for a tinkerer, someone who is passionate about coding and lives to solve technical challenges. You should be obsessed with keeping your code neatly documented, excited by improvements in performance, efficiency, reliability, comfortable with ambiguity, and driven to make things work. You should have expertise in electronics and instrumentation to work on projects that involve close collaborations with industry and medical institutions for developing novel ultrasound-based technologies. Individuals recruited under this position will be tasked with a variety of research tasks including but not limited to programming research-grade ultrasound engines, e.g., Verasonics or Cephasonics, and developing and optimizing fabrication techniques for producing novel wearable ultrasound sensors and accompanying electronics.Primary Responsibilities may include:Working closely with a team of software and hardware engineers to develop specifications and requirements;Serve as a liaison with the Cephasonics to exchange system specifications, protocols, and data;Characterize electro-acoustical properties of custom-fabricated ultrasound sensors;Developing software for controlling custom sensors using Cephasonics engine;Developing beamforming and image processing algorithms for custom sensors;Designing and testing signal processing boards;Designing and developing embedded systems software;Testing, troubleshooting, and debugging integrated ultrasound systems;Benchmark custom ultrasound transducers against commercially available clinical systems;Preparing in-depth documentation of hardware, software, and user manuals;Preparing technical reports, patents, publications, regulatory documents and applications, and proposals for new innovative technologies; andSupport ongoing imaging studies.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree;Strong aptitude for math and physics;Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design;Instrumentation engineering experience;Some experience in programming;Instrumentation engineering experience;Ability to work on accelerated product development schedules;Ability to communicate with multidisciplinary teams; andDemonstrate strong documentation skills writing specs, test plans, in code commentary and flow charts.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent degree;Experience with biomedical instrumentation, specifically ultrasound instrumentation;Experience with Altium, Eagle, or similar PCB ECAD design tools;Soldering, prototyping, testing and measurement experience;Experience with signal processing;Experience with programming in MATLAB, Python, and C;Experience with embedded C programming and IDE's (MPLab, IAR, etc.);Solid understanding of microcontroller hardware and firmware design, including peripherals such as ADCs, Timers, etc. (familiarity with PIC chipset a plus);Understanding of microcontroller power management modes and how to design for low power applications (internal vs. external oscillator selection, wake on interrupt, etc...);Experience programming an embedded system for an FDA regulated medical device;Experience developing Software Requirements Specifications, an Architecture Design Chart (includes a detailed depiction of functional units and software modules - state diagrams, flow charts, etc.), and Software Design Specifications; andExperience with signal processing.Mason Engineering: The Future of Engineering is HereThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and the School of Computing.
