Recreation Leader III - Teen Coordinator

Part-time Permanent Position

The City of Alexandria is in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. Overview

In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader III will oversee the drop-in teen center and facilitate structured activities and trips for local youth. Primary responsibilities entail researching, planning, implementing, and executing weekly age-appropriate programs, trips, and special events. The incumbent will seek sponsors, partnerships, and volunteers to lead various workshops and educational sessions. The Recreation Leader III will be responsible for increasing teen center attendance and participation through engaging programs and activities.

Major areas of responsibility include:
  1. Program Planning & Implementation (50% of position/10 hours per week)

Plan, develop, and implement daily social, educational, and recreational activities, programs, and special events per the mission and goals.

  1. Outreach, Direct Service and Community Engagement (30% of position/8 hours per week)

Create and maintain relationships with community groups, schools, parents, and others to assist in advancing the teen center, publicizing events, and expanding general programming support and resources. Create and maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space for teens. Actively supervise youth and enforce the code of conduct and discipline policies

  1. People Operations and Administrative (10% of position/6 hours per week)

Perform operational functions such as responding to inquiries within 24 hours, seek new partnerships quarterly, program within the assigned budget, data entry, and program registration.

  1. Other (10% of position/6 hours per week)

Participate in department meetings and training as required. Perform and complete other duties as assigned by supervisor. Provide front desk and facility coverage when needed.

To best serve in this position, good knowledge of the social and recreational sciences, including the theory, principles, and practices of recreation are needed. Strong planning and organizational skills, windows proficiency, and excellent communication skills will contribute to your success in the position. You must also demonstrate an ability to plan and execute programs and activities and work effectively in a group setting. Availability to work various hours not limited to Monday-Thursday from 4-9 pm and Fridays 3pm-12 midnight and rotational weekends.

You should possess independent judgment and initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, diplomacy, excellent oral and written communication, and emotional intelligence. Your mission and values must align with those of the Department (below). You should also be available to work various hours which include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. You will have the ability to be on call and resolve urgent situations over the phone and/or by reporting in person.

Recreation Leader III Key Performance objectives:
  • Be Responsive, Professional, Courteous and Accountable in all interactions.
  • Plan, develop and implement structured enrichment and group activities.
    • Actively supervise teen program participants per the code of conduct.
    • Ensure all safety precautions and rules are followed.
    • Actively participate in staff meetings, advisory council meetings, and in-service trainings.
    • Manage building operations during events and complete administrative paperwork.
    • Complete incident reports and submit them by the end of the shift.
    • Maintain records using Microsoft programs, RecTrac software, and general filing.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in community recreation preferably in a setting working with individuals of all abilities, ethnicities, and socio-economic status; Passionate for kids, creative, flexible, excellent communication skills, and phenomenal customer service; Be available to work Monday-Thursday from 4-9 pm and Fridays 3pm-12 midnight and rotational weekends & special events; Available to work additional days that will provide the greatest benefit to the organization. Have a deep desire and interest in working with a diverse population daily.
