Police Department Computer Programmer Analyst
The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington, and Fairfax counties. An Overview
Are you interested in supporting operational personnel in fulfilling their mission by supporting and developing automated systems? Do you enjoy working with systems that aid data driven decision making and critical analytics? Are you a technology professional interested in adding value to the mission of public safety? Consider joining the professional staff of the Alexandria Police Department. As a member of the Technology Division, you will play an integral role in providing accurate and informative tools and other technical resources to department personnel.
You will have the opportunity to interact with personnel at all levels of the department, influencing, maintaining, and enhancing the resources they use to interact with critical situational awareness, investigative, and analytical data.
You will work with a variety of databases and software systems including regional systems, COTS solutions, customized third-party applications, and internally developed solutions which are developed by yourself and/or other team members.
You will work both independently and part of a group to complete assigned projects over multiple functional areas of the police department.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have experience supporting complex systems and working with databases. The ideal candidate should be able to develop complex statistical and analytical reports using SSRS or a similar tool. The ideal candidate should have direct/hands-on experience developing .NET web applications. A candidate must be able to work independently to complete assignments.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
Two Year College; One to two years experience as a Computer Programmer; completion of advanced courses in computer science or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; entry level hands on experience with a high level programming language such as C#, Visual Basic or PL/SQL, software such as Microsoft Access, Sequel Server, ASP.Net, Excel, and IBM Client Access; knowledge of HTML, XML, C#, VB, PHP, MySQL, programming languages.
Preferred Qualifications
Four Year College Degree; Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a four-year degree in Information Systems, Computer Technology, Business, Economics, or substantial work experience supporting medium to large computer applications systems; extensive working knowledge of, and significant hands on experience in developing .NET web applications ; relational database experience in MS SQL Server, to include SQL and stored procedures; experience utilizing reporting software such as Crystal Reports or MS SQL Server Reporting Services; experience utilizing a proprietary COTS SDK or workbench or with an enterprise development tool such as MS Visual Studio; experience customizing and administering SharePoint solutions, Tableau, and other tools that allow for automation, data access, and report generation.

- Supports and administers critical law enforcement systems while adhering to all law enforcement regulations and standards
- Opportunity to work with systems such as: Records Management (RMS), Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), electronic citations, license plate reader (LPR) and body worn cameras.
- Monitors IT systems to maintain a configuration to ensure optimum performance, data integrity, and system availability; Take corrective action on problems
- Designs and develops complex statistical and analytical reports using SSRS to provide easily understood information for use by Crime Analysts, Command Staff, and other departmental units.
- Collects and analyzes information necessary to develop and maintain departmental computer programs written in computer languages such as Microsoft Access, SQL, Microsoft Visual Studio and/or ASP.Net
- Reviews and tests software changes/updates to existing and projected software systems
- Explore the department’s use of SharePoint and other tools to help further automate administrative functions.
