(Sewer Maintenance)

An OverviewA Laborer III performs tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The Laborer III class differs from Laborer I and Laborer II in that tasks require a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Laborer III’s do not require as much supervision and will lead the crew when the supervisor is absent from the work site. Labor III lays out the details of each specific assignment and constantly checks the work in process and upon completion; or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. An incumbent in this class may assist Laborers II’s and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks to maintain and repair the facilities of the stormwater and wastewater collection system.
The Opportunity
  • Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, hydrants, and gate valves;
  • Assist the CCTV, Vacuum Truck, and or Jetter Truck Operators with inspecting and flushing sewers:
  • Posses the skills and abilities to lead a crew in performing assigned tasks related to sewer maintenance work and or stormwater related tasks;
  • Operate heavy equipment such as Dump trucks, Backhoes, Snowplows with spreaders, and other equipment used in the Sewer Industry;
  • Investigate complaints from a variety of user groups;
  • Participates in the construction, repair and/or asphalt patching of streets, concrete and brick sidewalks, and curbs and gutter to restore areas to their normal condition;
  • Inspect manholes to determine condition and locate blockages;
  • Operate jack hammers, chain saws, cutoff saws, and other mechanized equipment needed to make repairs to water and sewer lines;
  • Loads trucks with de-icing materials during snow operations. Applies sand and/or brine to icy areas as directed;
  • Installs service lines to hydrants and makes repairs to sewer laterals.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED; at least three years of experience in performing semi-skilled/skilled maintenance or construction tasks; knowledge of turf and/or grounds maintenance; and three years experience as a lead worker in any related trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the require knowledge, skills, and abilities and possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered the ideal candidate, one should also have the ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tolls of the trade
