Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to support digital transformation within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In this position the selected candidate will provide services for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OIT), Infrastructure Operations (IO), VA Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) Integrated Project Team (IPT). IPT is responsible for developing the master transition plan for all required activities related to its execution. Infrastructure Operations has a requirement to migrate hardware, operating systems, applications, and other elements of its IT infrastructure from Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) to IPv6.

Primary Responsibilities

Responsible for supporting software / platform engineering activities (depending on specialism), working with users to capture requirements, using sound technical capabilities to lead the design, development and maintenance of the relevant systems and ensuring compliance with the relevant standards. Specialisms: Software Engineering; Platform Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems
    Cloud Certification in either AWS and/or Azure
  • Years of experience: 8+ years, with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience working on development, support, and maintenance activity as an active member of a DevOps team.
  • Proficiency in API design patterns and Web Services (SCIM, REST, JSON, SOAP and other similar protocols).
  • Good understanding of authentication frameworks and protocols such as OIDC, OAuth, SAML etc
  • Proven experience with installation, configuration and maintenance of systems hosted in major cloud providers such as AWS and Azure.
  • Good understanding of the software development lifecycle, including design, security, design patterns for extensible and reliable code, automated unit and functional testing, CI/CD and telemetry.
  • Good understanding of modern, cloud native technologies like Kubernetes, Docker, SPIFFE, SPIRE, DAPR and Open Policy Agent.
  • Good Understanding of legacy platforms such as Windows, Active Directory, and Linux (all versions),
  • Team player who is willing to speak up and share what they have learnt.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others.
  • Strong in documentation, process analysis and design, requirement gathering and impact analysis

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience of Cloud hosted applications, containerization, and Platform as a Service.
  • Experience in deploying and configuring Open Policy Agent instances and writing policies in Rego
  • Experience in scripting Shell Scripting, Perl Scripting, and PowerShell
  • Appreciation of best-practices in security and privacy, microservices and Function-as-a-Service design, at scale monitoring, logging & alerting, and testing.
  • Experience supporting large Cabinet-level federal agencies, ideally the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Experience with coding for applications to not have embedded IP addresses
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues; desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
  • Capable self-starter with a drive to get all types of work done and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent ability to communicate across most mediums and settings.
