Get your Career Rolling with Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Solid Waste Management Program.

Newington HEO - Drives a variety of refuse trucks to collect refuse, brush and other recyclable material on county collection routes. Operates a variety of collection trucks in the curbside collection of residential and agency solid waste to include refuse, brush, and recyclables to include rear-end loaders, side-loaders, front-end loaders, and roll-offs. Transports solid waste to appropriate disposal facilities and transfer sites. Maintains daily pre and post trip logs of vehicles and equipment used to include mileage, fuel, and maintenance required. Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Inspects sites and resolve any issues which might interfere with collection operations. Provides outstanding customer service to residential and agency customers in the collection of curbside solid waste. Maintains effective relationships with citizens, employees and supervisors.

I66 Transfer Station HEO - Operates semi-tractor trailer trucks, and other heavy equipment such as front loaders, cranes, and rubber tire loaders, in the disposal of and transport of solid waste. Operates various maintenance equipment to perform facility and grounds maintenance. Completes daily vehicle pre/post trip inspections. Assures cleanliness of vehicles. Prepares and completes all required logs and reports including reports on traffic incidents. Utilizes the communication systems (cell phones, radios, etc.) in accordance with county policies. Operates a two-way radio system in accordance with the regulations of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Performs other duties as assigned; duties are performed under general supervision.

I95 Landfill Complex HEO - Operates heavy equipment to perform a variety of landfill and site maintenance tasks. Operates heavy construction type equipment such as rubber tire loaders, track loaders, excavators, backhoes, bulldozers and other equipment as assigned. Operates general facility equipment such as tractors, lawn mowers, street sweepers, etc. Performs vehicle pre- and post-trip inspections. Performs preventive maintenance on heavy equipment and small equipment. Provides customer service to residents and businesses using the facility. Performs related duties as required.

Additional skills, abilities and responsibilities include:
  • Uses effective communication skills to provide oral and written instructions.
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines established by the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and the Solid Waste Management Program safety programs and guidelines.
  • Reports for duty on time in proper uniform and physical condition.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles for cleanliness and is in good working condition
  • Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services guiding principles.
  • Maintains the standards of the county, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance to all applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B" or higher.

Note: Only candidates with a Class "A" CDL will be considered for the I-66 & I-95 locations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, alcohol/drug test, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

Required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience operating construction-type equipment. Exceptional safety and driving record. Excellent work ethics and standards of conduct; demonstrated team building, problem solving, customer service, and communication skills. Proven leadership qualities. Prior experience in the solid waste industry (or a similar operating industry). Working knowledge and experience with computer software applications such as Excel and Word. Ability to speak and understand English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, run, and bend the knees frequently. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions. Ability to perform duties in any type of weather conditions. May be exposed to Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
