Academic Advisor and Admissions Coordinator - Film and Video StudiesGeorge Mason University's Film and Video Studies Program, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), seeks a qualified candidate to fill the position of Academic Advisor and Admissions Coordinator. Familiarity with advising is a critical aspect of this position.The ideal candidate must be familiar with the academic program, academic policies, and the university's student services within or outside of the program and College. The Academic Advisor and Admissions Coordinator will work with students from the prospective stage through the alumni stage. They are part of a team working to be proactive concerning activities that will improve the student experience in the program.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:The successful candidate will:1) Provide academic advice and guidance to prospective and current undergraduate Film and Video Studies (FAVS) students from admission to graduation in support of the students' academic and career goals.Support and engage students in the process of developing clear and attainable educational goals;Effectively interpret, implement, and communicate Mason degree requirements, deadlines, policies, and procedures;Regularly review students' semester and long-range academic goals to ensure they are on target;Act as academic advisor for potential and enrolled undergraduate students, and answer inquiries and direct students to appropriate resources;Learn new advising technologies as required by the college and university;Work closely with the Registrar's Office to ensure accuracy of degree audits;Communicate student needs, concerns, and requests to the Program Director; andMaintain confidentiality in accordance to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws.2) Coordinate and manage key operational processes for Film and Video Studies, including graduation and student affairs; assist in course scheduling and grading.Coordinate, monitor, and assist FAVS undergraduate students with the graduation process;Organize and provide FAVS graduation information for Academic Affairs; and coordinate participation from Film and Video Studies for Fall and Spring convocation/commencement ceremonies;Monitor student scholarships eligibility;Work with Program Director and Program Manager to assist in semester course schedule for FAVS; monitor enrollment and proactively address any enrollment issues;Manage grading process and provide knowledgeable, proactive support to faculty and students; may act as proxy to ensure grades are submitted on time; andServe as ex-officio member on the Film and Video Studies' Curriculum Committee as an expert in academic policy and procedure and other catalog information.3) Develop Film and Video Studies Outreach Initiatives in coordination with Program Director, Alumni, Media, CVPA Student Academic Affairs, and FAVS faculty.Develop strategies and implementation of programs for recruitment and retention;Coordinate events that engage students outside the classroom; and attend admissions events and orientations as representative of Film and Video Studies and engage in outreach to foster program growth;Attend recruitment events and open houses within and outside of Mason as a representative of the Film and Video Studies; andBuild relationships and programming with partners such as Northern Virginia Community College.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree and demonstrated full-time work experience in academic advising, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;Significant work experience in academic advising, student career counseling, or providing student support in a higher education setting (generally two or more years);Knowledge of university academic policies and procedures;Experience with advising technology and programs (e.g., Ellucian Banner, Degree Works, EAB, etc.);Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team, and also to work independently within established guidelines and best practices, and to interpret and apply policies and procedures for key operational processes within FAVS;Ability to handle confidential student information with utmost discretion and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and university policies, procedures, and regulations;Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal and presentation skills; andDemonstrated ability to be detail-oriented, organized, and good at multitasking.Preferred Qualifications:A background in the arts and film or related field preferred;Experience in the area of film and media studies in Higher Education; andMaster's Degree.
