Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a full-time, versatile Senior Communications Associate with demonstrated experience writing and editing content for large-scale federal programs. This individual will be responsible for developing change management communications and stakeholder engagement resources for the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) Office of Patient Advocacy (OPA). These efforts will support the modernization of patient advocacy and complaint resolution operations in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, proactive problem-solver and action-oriented team player with previous experience translating complex information into plain language. He/she must be committed to providing superior service, poised in a fast-paced environment and have a positive and flexible attitude.

This is a contingent hire position. This full-time position is currently fully remote. However, the Senior Communications Associate may be expected to travel to Washington, D.C. or other locations in the United States for meetings, events and trainings.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Write, edit and manage a broad range of print and digital communications materials.
  • Translate complex messaging into plain language to ensure materials are easy to read, understand and use.
  • Gather, analyze, fact check and interpret data from various sources.
  • Implement edits provided by clients and other team members effectively and quickly.
  • Ensure content conveys critical information and reflects key messaging in a standardized and consistent voice and tone.
  • Develop themes, concepts, messaging and distribution tactics for materials.
  • Plan, generate and deliver client-ready materials for stakeholders, including client leadership.
  • Write, review and edit content in compliance with AP style and other federal content guidelines.
  • Review documents for stylistic and formatting consistency.
  • Support other duties and assignments as required by OPA.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of related communications experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Experience supporting complex projects and transformation efforts within the federal government, preferably with VA.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Excellent ability to communicate across most mediums and settings.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Knowledge of the latest change management principles and content best practices.
  • Prosci Change Management Practitioner Certification
  • Ability to review and adhere to federal and industry-standard style guidelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to distill complex information into compelling messages.
  • Strong time management, creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
  • Capable self-starter with a drive to get all types of work done and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
