Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring engineers and data scientists at all levels for roles on our News Engineering team. We're looking for collaborative engineers who would like to work closely with our newsroom, product, and other engineering teams to build the next generation of software to support journalism at The Post.

The News Engineering Team is a React / Node, Python, and Amazon Web Services shop, working on a variety of cutting edge projects at the intersection of journalism and technology. Members of our team have processed live data for the Olympics and election nights, open-sourced software for reading Federal Election Commission filings, partnered with our Graphics and Design desks to build tools for visual storytelling, processed videos for The Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning January 6th coverage, maintained data pipelines for tracking police shootings, and more.

Motivation
  • You have a desire to contribute to The Post's journalism through technology.
  • You are passionate about refining and improving team process, culture, documentation and communication while tackling complex engineering challenges.
  • You want to work at a deeper level of abstraction than a single story or beat.
  • You are excited about learning new technologies and applying them to the practice of journalism.

Responsibilities
  • Enhance The Post's ability to pursue ambitious journalism and digital storytelling by suggesting features, designing solutions, and contributing to the team's technical architecture and codebase.
  • Keep the team up to date with current technology and best practices by pursuing opportunities to learn and experiment with new tools.
  • Maintain the team's high standards for quality and reusability by regularly reviewing code and collaborating with colleagues on solutions.
  • Foster effective team collaboration and communication by improving and documenting internal tools, processes and guidelines.
  • Assist in attracting and hiring engineers by actively participating in recruiting and contributing feedback on our overall hiring process.

Qualifications
  • Professional experience working in a software setting. Years of experience, among other qualifications, will determine level.
  • Experience building and maintaining systems in production environments.
  • Familiarity with some of the languages and frameworks in our stack. Our front-end engineers use modern JavaScript like React and NextJS. Our back-end engineers tend to use Node and Python. Our data scientists tend to work in Python with the occasional bit of analysis in R. All of us use Amazon Web Services.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Levels
  • If you have less than three years, we'd love to evaluate you for an engineer or data scientist role
  • If you have more than three years but less than about seven years, we'd love to evaluate you for a senior role
  • If you have more than about seven years, we'd love to talk to you about a principal role
