Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a dedicated, forward looking Senior Software Engineer to support digital transformation within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This individual will work with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), VA Central Office (VACO) or the Office of Information Technology (OIT) to support the administration's mission with activities such as: project, product and product line management; moving from waterfall management processes to Agile and Scaled Agile practices; and from stove-piped development, delivery and operations processes to DevSecOps best practices such as Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD). We are seeking individuals committed to delivering and improving quality services to Veterans.

Primary Responsibilities

A Senior Software Engineer has extensive experience and knowledge to design, code, test, debug and document software in a variety of programming languages. Has the knowledge of the latest programming languages and techniques. Has extensive experience in creating strategies for developing IT systems and applications. Has experience in evaluating alternative approaches and selecting optimal approaches. Must be proficient in some or all responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical lead contributing to and directing the efforts of development teams, including internal and external team members.
  • Determine root cause for the most complex software issues and develop practical, efficient, and permanent technical solutions.
  • Responsible for the technical design, architecture, and implementation of subsystems.
  • Keep up to date on emerging technology solutions that impact the data and cloud computing domains.
  • Work closely with software engineers to build quality by ensuring proper test and code coverage, configuration quality, monitoring, early performance testing.
  • Architect, design and implement solutions independently.
  • Mentor team members on technologies, techniques, or standards across the organization.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering or Other Engineering or Technical Discipline is required.
    (8 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education)
  • 5 years related experience required.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge to design, code, test, debug, and document software in a variety of programming languages.
  • Knowledge of the latest programming languages and techniques.
  • Extensive experience in creating strategies for developing IT systems and applications.
  • Experience in evaluating alternative approaches and selecting optimal approaches.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience supporting large Cabinet-level federal agencies, ideally the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues; desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
  • Capable self-starter with a drive to get all types of work done and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent ability to communicate across most mediums and settings.
  • Knowledge of military and Veteran populations.
