Job Summary

Aptive is seeking a full-time Public Affairs Specialist to support expanded efforts to build awareness of FMCSA's safety-first mission.This position will support the Office of External Affairs. The Office of External Affairs works to deliver a consistent message to the public regarding Agency's safety priorities, programs, and policies.

A variety of traditional and new information dissemination techniques are used to inform the transportation community about FMCSA and its safety-first mission, respond to Congress, media and public inquiries, build relationships with industry and associations, develop marketing strategies, and monitor customer satisfaction and engagement, media coverage and other outcomes of its outreach and communications efforts.

This full-time position will be required to commute into the office 1 day a week in Washington DC. This is a contingent hire position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Write, edit and coordinate a broad range of communications/outreach materials (e.g., articles, blogs, brochures, fact sheets, flyers, media pitches, mobile apps, outreach scripts, social media posts, videos, websites) under strict deadlines.
  • Create and disseminate pitches, presentations, speeches, toolkits and other communication materials to establish partnerships and enhance partnership development.
  • Plan and coordinate speaking opportunities and vendor meetings at key conferences and industry engagements.
  • Gather, analyze and interpret information and data from various sources to use across content.
  • Plan, generate and deliver client-ready materials for stakeholders, including leadership.
  • Develop content in compliance with AP style and other guidelines.
  • Review outreach material for stylistic and formatting consistency.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in writing, strategic communications, outreach, public relations and strategic partnership development.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills to include familiarity with AP styles and ability to adapt to specific organizational style conventions rapidly.
  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, hard sciences, or a related field.
  • Expert knowledge of the use of digital means to connect and engage is critical.
  • Experience supporting large federal agencies.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven expertise in strategic communications, public relations, public affairs, research, writing and editing.
  • Proficiency in organizing, communicating information, and scheduling and leading meetings with c-suite level stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple moving parts, juggle assignments and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to deliver clear, compelling communications, both written and verbal.
  • Perform well in team settings and work productively as an individual.
  • Positive and energetic attitude with a strong desire to meet goals, priorities and commitments.
