The Carta team maintains the email newsletter platform for The Washington Post, works across the spectrum of public-facing newsletters as well as tools that are essential for the work of our editors and reporters. The Washington Post is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Carta engineering team. The Carta team maintains the email newsletter platform for The Washington Post, works across the spectrum of public-facing newsletters as well as tools that are essential for the work of our editors and reporters. Who we are
- The Carta team continuously builds and deploys software applications that allow our newsroom to edit and produce stories and newsletters and our marketing and subscription teams to reach our audiences.
- Washington Post Engineering is a department of more than 600 people working to support The Post's world-class newsroom.
Responsibilities
- Empower our editors to rapidly produce engaging emails by closely collaborating to determine what features can be built across the Carta platform.
- Deliver a seamless and engaging user experience by brainstorming and building new features and optimizations for the Carta platform.
- Integrate content across The Post's publishing landscape and platforms into the newsletter management, templating, and curation process.
- Build an integrated and flourishing ecosystem of micro-services to deliver content to our readers.
- Work directly with our partners in product as well as newsroom and business-side stakeholders and translate requirements into technical tasks.
- Support the reliability of our core infrastructure as part of the on-call rotation for Carta.
Minimum Qualifications
- 4+ years of software engineering experience
- Extensive experience with JavaScript and/or Java
- Hands on experience with back-end technologies such as Node.js, Java, Spring Boot
- Strong experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, ECS, EC2
- Experience building web applications on AWS
- Experience with relational databases such as Postgres or NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
- Eagerness to explore and learn new programming languages, tools and applications
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior work with DevOps technologies like Docker and/or AWS Products such as CodePipeline
- Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks
- Familiarity with TypeScript
- Familiarity with Express, NextJS
- Excellent communication, documentation and presentation skills for other engineers and our stakeholders
- Experience in agile software development teams working iteratively with designers, product managers, and stakeholders
