Benefits Administrator The George Mason University, HR & Payroll Department is looking for qualified individuals for two open Benefits Administrator positions. About the Position:To provide employee benefits administration to the University's employees. Administers employee benefits programs within federal, state, and university guidelines. Communicate with employees, resolve benefit-related issues, and collaborate with other University departments and external vendors.Responsibilities:Benefits AdministrationAdminister employee benefits programs, including group health, dental, life, disability, and other programs offered at George Mason University to faculty and staff;Advise and inform faculty and staff employees of the details of the University's benefits programs;Conduct weekly benefits orientations for both new faculty and staff when needed;Communicate and process employee retirements for both faculty and staff;Participate in outreach educational programs, such as Pre-Retirement Seminars;Resolve benefit-related issues and respond to queries and requests promptly within 48 hours; andMaintain and create records, reports, and documentation following federal, state, and provider regulations.Employee Extended Absence ManagementAdvise employees on Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Virginia Sickness & Disability Program (VSDP) eligibility, and benefits;Coordinate all FMLA, VSDP, and long-term disability actions between employees, departments, and external vendors/stakeholders; andAdvise department managers and employees on Employee Leave of Absence and the impact on the employee's benefits.Retirement ManagementConduct pre-retirement presentations to eligible employees;Gather data from university and state systems to determine retirement eligibility and the specific retirement plan to administer benefits accordingly;Advise and explain the University's retirement benefit plan policies, procedures, and legal requirements to eligible employees and beneficiaries, such as life insurance, health insurance, retirement fund payouts, health insurance credit, applying for Medicare, perks, and privileges;Conduct one-on-one meetings with retirement applicants and beneficiaries about the retirement process, eligible benefits, and options;Assist employees in completing and submitting retirement documents, including the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) online retirement application process;Communicate with state, third-party vendors, and other HR representatives to gather information and resolve any issues;Enter data into multiple University and state systems promptly for a smooth transition;Administer benefits to all retirees and dependents under the Optional Retirement Plan;Liaise with the financial institutions to verify and compile data for the administration of retirement benefits, as needed; andMaintain records of retirees and beneficiaries.Workers' CompensationCommunicate and process workers' compensation inquiries and claims;Submit claims to the state's 3rd party claim administrator;Assist the 3rd party administrator with gathering data and documentation for claim investigations and administration; andServe as the University's point of contact for state agencies, medical providers, and 3rd party vendors related to workers' compensation cases.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in HR related field preferred, or equivalent experience;Progressive experience in benefits administration in a large organizational setting (typically 2+ years);Working knowledge of employee benefits administration and programs;Working knowledge of state and/or federal regulations, policies, and/or procedures;Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality customer service;Demonstrated interpersonal skills as well as the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing;Ability to handle confidential data and personal situations with empathy and professionalism;Ability to research problems, apply analytical techniques, and follow through on issues to resolution;Demonstrated Microsoft Word and Excel skills; andAbility to be a team player.Preferred Qualifications:Customer service experience desired.
