Media Relations CoordinatorThe George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School provides legal education to JD and graduate students. The School of Law has two fundamental missions. First, it prepares students to use their law degree in a broad range of public and private section organizations with the Commonwealth and around the world. About the Position:The Media Relations Coordinator works with the Assistant Dean to identify opportunities to feature law school faculty in the media as experts in their areas of study. The Media Relations Coordinator writes pitches, connects faculty with producers and reporters, arranges interviews, and reports results. The Media Relations Coordinator also prepares content for the school's social media accounts and cross-posts social media to other related accounts.Responsibilities:General functions, but not limited to:Works with law school leadership to develop strategies for elevating the school's profile in mass and trade media;Monitors the news cycle for topics on which faculty and administration can comment, and pitches story ideas to media contacts;Cultivates relationships with reporters and producers that lead to media placement for faculty and administration in the media, including TV, radio, and print;Manages and develops media contact lists, and conducts outreach to new media sources;Monitors results of media coverage and reports on results and trends; andResponsible for managing and creating content for the school's social media accounts, and ensures cross-posting of social media posts from other affiliated accounts (e.g., student groups, research centers).Required Qualifications:Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts degree in public relations, communication, or journalism, or have received a degree in the aforementioned field(s); or equivalent combination of education and experience;Demonstrated experience in media relations, journalism, communications, or similar fields (generally 5-7 years);Understanding of media relations, news coverage, and the process for pitching and placing content with local and national media;Thorough knowledge of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram;Excellent organizational skills, with the proven ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities effectively;Experience with media relations management systems such as Cision;Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;Research and analytical skills;Ability to contact media producers after hours and on weekends; andOutstanding verbal and written communication skills.Preferred Qualifications:Ability to operate website content management systems; andAbility to operate Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
