Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an editor who can produce a daily editorial package that informs, enlightens and engages through smart curation and powerful presentations, pairing sharp headlines with stunning visuals and effective layouts to create maximum impact when promoting digital content on the app and distributed news platforms.
This role requires a well-rounded journalist with strong news judgment and a keen sense of audience. Candidates must not only have a command of style and grammar but also understand how to write excellent headlines for different platforms, including the app, homepage and alerts. While the ability to respond quickly to breaking news is necessary, equally valuable is the skill to identify trending topics of high interest and provide counterprogramming with stories that offer respite.
This candidate should have a mobile-first mentality and a strong understanding of that audience's behaviors and needs, including how best to present content clearly in a limited space. Helping to determine story treatment and promotion on The Post's app and mobile site is a critical function under this role.
We are seeking someone who can think quickly and creatively about how to deliver journalism to new audiences and support recirculation efforts. The editor must be a strong multitasker and must be organized, keeping a close eye on analytics, trending topics and how our journalism is promoted on other Post platforms. This position requires close work with newsroom departments, including homepage, SEO, photo, video, audio, graphics and news design. Effective communication skills and collaboration are required. The editor will also work closely with distributed news partners such as Apple News.
Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience, preferably in a fast-paced digital environment and/or digital curation space, including but not limited to homepage, app and social media work.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom and includes night and weekend hours.
Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter detailing the strengths they would bring to this role to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 11/6/2022 will be prioritized. Address the cover letter to Curation and Platforms Editor Ben Pillow and Curation and Platforms Deputy Editor Steven Bohner.
Wherever you are in your life or career, The Washington Post offers comprehensive and inclusive benefits for every step of your journey:
