Information Technology Specialist, College of Visual and Performing ArtsThe George Mason University, College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks qualified applicants for an Information Technology Specialist. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:The Tech Specialist is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, and repair of CVPA Mason owned and supported computer hardware, software, smartphones, and various types of peripherals. The Specialist acts under the supervision of the Director of Technology and Security for the College to provide technical assistance to computer users including faculty and staff.The Tech Specialist provides support to over 2,000 plus desktop and laptop computers owned by the College of Visual and Performing Arts (to include, but not limited to, Dell, Apple, HP, etc. hardware); various peripherals, including printers, scanners, and mobile devices; and all Mason supported software, including operating systems (Microsoft Windows OS; Apple OS X; etc.) and application software (Microsoft Office, etc.) across Mason campuses. The Tech Specialist acts as the college backup administrator for Jamf Pro, Mason's tool for managing Macs.Additional duties will include providing classroom support and technical support for CVPA classrooms.Responsibilities:Install software, debug applications, configure computers and peripherals. Diagnose and resolve basic and advanced technical issues;Support classroom AV systems, printers, projectors, and tech equipment. Set up, upgrades, debugging, and imaging of Mac OS systems;Understand computer systems, mobile devices and other tech products;Install, configure and maintain classroom technologies including projectors, control panels, TVs and Apple peripherals such as iPads, iPhones, Apple TV;Install and replace basic computer hardware such as hard-drives, RAM, screens;Understand IT security concepts with an emphasis on information security and risk assessment and enforce security best practices according to standards;Create and manage accounts and account permissions and enforces security best practices;Debug and report network connection issues. Set up network access and installs applications for file sharing, cloud computing, and security;Choose appropriate and most effective solutions to computer hardware, software and telephone equipment problems;Assist faculty and staff with software issues, system configurations, account creation, management of permissions and security;Assist faculty and staff with using various resources such as learning new Mason applications, third-party applications, and Web 2.0 applications;Update inventory databases, and completes requests for equipment surplus;Provide technical advice and assistance to customers, including basic instruction on the use of equipment and software;Work with professors on the installation and the use of software applications used in Higher Education such as video conferencing, messaging, and online teaching sites;Schedule work-study students for Open Lab, Help Desk or other technology related work;Understand Cloud services and applications Cloud computing: installation of client, account setup and management and permissions. Provides technical support for setup and troubleshooting of applications like OneDrive, Adobe CC Suite;Follow up with customers on completed service requests/incidents to ensure customer satisfaction;Work with professors on the installation and the use of software applications used in Higher Education such as video conferencing, messaging, and online teaching sites;Attend other tasks assigned by the Director of Technology & Security; andIdentify and suggest possible improvements on procedures.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or Information Technology; or equivalent combination of education and experience;If not A+ certified, attain A + certification within one year of hiring;Demonstrated experience working in Information Technology (typically 3+ years); andDemonstrated hands-on technical experience in installation and troubleshooting of Apple hardware and software.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Computer Science preferred;Experience in Higher Education environment preferred;Certifications or training from applicable hardware and software manufacturers desired. Apple, Microsoft, Dell and JAMF Software are desired;One or more years' hands-on technical experience in installation and repair of Apple hardware and software;Strong interpersonal skills;Knowledge of IT security concepts with an emphasis on information security and risk assessment;Experience installing and maintaining AV systems for classrooms; andComputer Help Desk experience.
