Term Instructor of JournalismThe Department of Communication at George Mason University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month term instructional position in journalism. The initial term of appointment is for a 3-semester contract (January - May 2023 and August 2023 - May 2024), with the opportunity for annual 9-month contract renewals.Applicants should have an MA/MS degree in journalism, communication, or related field and a record of teaching excellence, broadly defined. Teaching experience can come from professional contexts (workshops, etc.), high school experience, or, preferably, the college or undergraduate level. We invite applications from candidates across all platforms, subfields, and specializations within journalism, including, but not limited to, digital/social/mobile, television/radio, podcasting, photojournalism, print/newspaper, and so on. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach undergraduate courses in a variety of areas such as introduction to journalism, writing and reporting, multimedia storytelling, online journalism, data and computational journalism, journalism law, and writing across the media. The selected candidate will teach four journalism courses per semester (eight per academic year), and engage in formal service to the department, college, and/or university. The exact nature of this service will be negotiated with the department chair but will likely include advising student journalists, liaising with staff in Student Media, and assisting with curriculum development and assessment.Required Qualifications:A master's degree in journalism, media studies, communication, or related field;Journalism teaching experience, broadly defined;Professional journalism experience; andA commitment to creating inclusive and equitable classroom environments.Preferred Qualifications:Journalism teaching experience at the college and/or university levels;Three years or more of professional journalism experience;Experience advising student journalists and/or student media organizations;Network of professional contacts, preferably in the DC, Virginia, Maryland (DMV) region, for student internships and career development;Experience with or commitment to learning how to use online teaching tools (e.g., Blackboard, Zoom, Wikis, etc.); andExperience with or commitment to teaching a diverse student population.Required Materials:Cover letter.
