Duties

  • Proofreads both straight and tabular matter to detect and mark all typographical, spelling, and style errors using standard proofreader marks and the Government Printing Office (GPO) Style Manual.
  • Keyboards coded manuscript copy with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Manipulates files and extensions in the database to make corrections, author's alterations, and updates.
  • Edits and prepares keyboarded material for typesetting.
  • Revises galley corrections and page proofs, manually and/or electronically prepares copy for typesetting in accordance with GPO style and procedures.
  • Meets GPO standards for quality.
  • Utilizes SGML, XML, and associated programs to proofread and typeset government publications.
  • Skills in interpreting Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), coding and troubleshooting typeset files, identify troubleshoot and fix errors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Physical - Effort: The work is generally sedentary and involves a combination of sitting and standing.
  • Working Conditions: Primarily the duties are performed in an office setting. Ear protection, eye protection and safety shoes are provided as necessary.
  • Working Conditions: The incumbent may be required to visit other sections whose work is performed in a production environment where there is exposure to noise, inkmist, odors/fumes, and paper dust from machinery.
  • Individuals joining GPO are required to provide their current COVID-19 vaccine status to GPO Medical Services prior to their entry on duty date.
  • GPO employees that work at a GPO or customer facility and are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are required to participate in the Agency's weekly COVID-19 screening/testing program.

To qualify for the Proofreader/Keyboarder, KI -4403-00, you must meet the following requirements:

SCREEN OUT ELEMENT #1) : Ability to do the work of a Proofreader/Keyboarder with normal supervision: Examples of training or experience needed include: proofreading books, newspapers, or magazine proofs for publication or general distribution and must demonstrate skill in manipulating electronic files in order to make corrections, key manuscripts with a high degree of speed and accuracy, working in a fast-paced environment, typesetting material, and applying and interpreting proofreader marks.

This requires knowledge of printing composition technology, processes, and terminology, skill in using and interpreting standard proofreader marks, and skill in using personal computers and software related to the printing/composing trade. To meet this screen out, applicants must have completed a formal, recognized printing apprenticeship; or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the composing trade (at least four years) in proofreading books or magazine proofs or comparable copies for publication or general distribution would be considered substantially equivalent practical experience.

Experience such as copy holder is not considered as practical experience. In addition, applicants must have at least one year of journey person-level experience in proofreading books or magazine proofs for publication or general distribution or two years of journey person level experience in reading proofs on a daily newspaper.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement to be considered.

Education

Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.

The GPO offers Transit subsidy for commuters using public transportation (Metro Bus/Rail, MARC, VRE, etc.).

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.
