Overview: AARP Services, Inc., founded in 1999, is a wholly-owned taxable subsidiary of AARP. AARP Services manages the provider relationships for and performs quality control oversight of the wide range of products and services that carry the AARP name and are made available by independent providers as benefits to AARP's millions of members. The provider offers currently span health products, financial products, travel and leisure products, and life event services. Specific products include Medicare supplemental insurance; credit cards, auto and home, mobile home and motorcycle insurance, life insurance and annuities; member discounts on rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and lodging; special offers on technology and gifts; pharmacy services and legal services. AARP Services also engages in new product development activities for AARP and provides certain consulting services to outside companies. As the Privacy Attorney for AARP Services, Inc. (ASI), you will work on privacy governance and data privacy issues for ASI and its affiliates including working with the AARP Privacy Program as well as other related legal subject areas. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel in carrying out privacy/data regulatory and contractual compliance and building the privacy program at ASI. Additionally, you will support other legal areas as needed and provide legal counsel, advice, and research on a variety of issues. Responsibilities: Delivers effective oral and written communication. Assists in developing policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance. Ensures legal and regulatory compliance and counsels business units and affiliated entities, to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, and timely.Provides legal analysis and guidance regarding business initiatives (eg, identifying legal risks and mitigation steps, determining enterprise-wide implications). Structures legal obligations in contract to protect the interests of the organization.Negotiates and drafts agreements with providers, vendors and other third parties. Works collaboratively with lines of business, the organization, and providers to align business goals with stakeholders' interests. In addition, works with the AARP Privacy Program. Maintains knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, and provides legal research, analysis, and guidance.Provides legal guidance around general legal guidance, consumer and third-party data privacy issues, privacy governance, data privacy issues, membership issues, procurement issues, development and operation of social welfare products, real estate matters, trademark, copyright and various intellectual property rights. Negotiates and advises on contracts, new business models, legal risks and other organizational related transactions. Qualifications: Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree, plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in data and privacy including experience in developing, maintaining, and growing data and privacy governance programs. Must be a member of good standing in the District of Columbia bar.Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to think on one's feet and clearly express arguments and ideas to staff and to provide engaging, clear training for staff who may have minimal legal background.Ability to function independently with limited guidance as well as work with others cross functionally.Ability to handle multiple, complex projects on an ongoing basis, with strong attention to detail.Must be customer-oriented, a team player, approachable, responsive, and engaging. In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
