Part-time Clinical Psychiatrist

Position Overview:

The City of Alexandria is hiring for a part-time (20-hours/week) Psychiatrist. This position is part of a passionate team of providers (psychiatrists, nurses, psychiatric technicians, and case managers) all working together to serve clients with behavioral health disorders. This position provides clinical psychiatric services to individuals with mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorders, including psychiatric and medication evaluations, diagnosis, treatment, and emergency crisis intervention when needed. The position is office-based and includes wrap-around comprehensive clinical support from the Department’s clinically licensed therapists and case managers; we work as a team, have access to a wide array of ancillary supports and services, and are deeply committed to serving those most in need in the City of Alexandria.

Examples of Duties:
  • Provides complete and detailed psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services.
  • Provides a therapeutic environment conducive to a healthy relationship between the client and the psychiatrist.
  • Reviews client clinical records to assure adequacy and proper prescription of medications.
  • Educates clients, family members or legal representatives regarding the nature and treatment of psychiatric illness, medications, and other treatment/rehabilitation techniques.
  • Obtains informed consent for medications in accordance with policies and procedures; and ensures clients are free to ask questions regarding medication services and any treatment options.
  • Prescribes and delivers medication according to rules and regulations of the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy.
  • Maintains clear and detailed written documentation required for maintaining client clinical records; prepares or signs reports in a timely manner, ensures handwritten documents are legible and in accordance with safety writing procedures.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Some experience in the practice of psychiatry; satisfactory completion of residency program in psychiatry; and eligibility for Board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a Clinical Psychiatrist; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Applicant must be licensed and currently registered with the Commonwealth of Virginia to practice regular or osteopathic medicine. The employee must also be licensed by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for prescribing medications.

Preferred Qualifications

Diplomate of the Board of The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Psychiatrist must maintain Virginia license to practice regular or osteopathic medicine and the license by Drug Enforcement Administration for prescribing medications in Schedules II-VI. If board certification is claimed, a verification of status will be confirmed prior to determining the salary level. Psychiatrist is responsible to maintain Board certification (general and sub-specialty) in order to receive salary based on the medical scale.

Notes

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment checks to include FBI/Federal Records; Medicare/Medicaid Database; Commonwealth of Virginia child abuse registry; Education/Certifications Verification; Sheriff's Office clearance, where required, and DMV record and Valid Driver's License.

Schedule:

20 hours/per week (Monday-Friday); hours negotiable; no weekend, overnight or on-call responsibilities.
