POSITION PURPOSE The Materials & Components Reliability Engineer is to lead materials application studies, specify materials application requirements, develop test plans for materials/components functionality & reliability verification, provide guidance on appropriate application of materials/components for product designs, and support materials/components failure analysis for products served in all global regions; participate in new product development initiatives; support product conceptual design and proposals. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Complete routine projects or tasks with minimal supervision or guidance, can also perform non-routine projects or tasks with guidance Responsible for the on-time completion of component development, sustaining, maintenance, and cost reduction projects Investigates and analyzes product/component design requirements and recommends optimum solutions. Analyze component failure data and lab test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions. Lead components DFMEAs and develop component reliability evaluation plans to ensure our reliability goals for components/materials are met Design of experiment using HALT techniques, direct the testing, and control of processes for reliability testing. Establishes reliability testing criteria, develops and participates in laboratory testing, and analyzes test data to identify and optimize component performance characteristics leading to enhanced product performance. Lead materials application studies including materials failure analysis, new materials applications on our products, selection of manufacturing process, etc. Review materials test data, interpret the test results, and write technical reports of all materials study work. Provide guidelines to product engineers/designers on appropriate application of materials on our products or appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials. Provide feedback/recommendations to engineers across the organization on products/ subsystems/ components and materials reliability evaluation plan Present the materials study findings to senior engineering management team with recommendations of materials/process selection for the best product performance/cost characteristic. Works closely with product engineers/designers and vendors in generating components/materials specifications and requirements. Applies regulatory codes such as CTI, UL, ASME, Eurovent, CE, PED, China GB, Japan JIT, and any others as required. Strives for continuous improvements in a global product development and process environment. NATURE & SCOPE The Materials & Components Reliability Engineer reports directly to the Engineering Manager, Global Components. As part of the Global Components team, this role will have cross-functional and cross-regional interaction with numerous teams throughout the organization. This role will have strong partnership with suppliers, with BAC R Lab in Jessup, and will have strong interaction with external testing labs when needed. KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Master's Degree in Materials Science or Reliability Engineering, or closely related fields 5 years of materials/reliability engineering experience with Master's degree or 8 Years of materials/reliability engineering experience with Bachelor's degree Familiar with FMEA, DFR, FRACAS, HALT, etc. techniques Work independently and also within a dynamic team environment to define requirements for materials/components and to develop verification plans and timelines Communicate and interface effectively with a global diverse audience including lab technicians, peer engineers, technical directors, and senior management personnel GREAT analytical, logic, and math skills; good organizational skills; attention to details Proficient in technical writing, can clearly and concisely document the details of any performed tasks Results- oriented, energetic, working in a fast paced environment; strong time management skills when working in parallel on multiple projects Working knowledge or direct hands-on experience of instrumentation and data acquisition systems Strong ability to review data, interpret testing results, and troubleshoot problems Ability to understand product/component function, reliability and quality requirements Collaborate with Product design/Quality/Sourcing teams to ensure all reliability design goals are achieved Experience with materials failure analysis techniques (Optical Microscopy, X-ray, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, scanning acoustic microscopes (C-SAM), cross sectioning equipment, decapsulating chemicals, CT-scanning, etc.) Technical Expertise: Design of Experiments; experience w/ HALT (or equivalent) required Familiarity w/ selections for materials used in key components, such as fans, motors, shafts, heat exchanger coils, pumps, piping, etc. preferred Working experience on metal weld penetration test & metal corrosion test Demonstrated abilities in research resulting in application of technical information from the web, in textbooks, and in research journals/publications Manage project timelines Manage project budgets (testing package budgets) Experience on coating materials and coating processes is preferred WORKING CONDITIONS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
