INTRODUCTION OF POSITION/SUMMARYReporting to the Chief Strategy and Development Officer and a member of Senior Leadership, the Vice President of Communications and Development will assume the leadership role to design, articulate, and implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising and communications strategy to advance the mission of Unity Health Care. The Vice President of Communications and Development will work closely with the Chief Strategy and Development Officer and other Unity leaders to set fundraising goals, implement annual fundraising strategies, and participate in the overall work of the department including managing 1-3 staff members. The Vice President of Communications and Development will have individual fundraising targets and will increase and diversify philanthropic revenue. The Vice President of Communications and Development will work closely with the Vice President for Program & Informatics to ensure a coordinated approach for fundraising as it concerns grants. The Vice President of Communications and of Communications and Development will also lead the Communications department to ensure brand alignment and on implementation of fundraising appeals. MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSIn collaboration with the CSDO and development staff, design and execute a fundraising plan that results in increased philanthropic support for Unity, both in the near term and for future support. In particular, increase engagement and financial support from existing donors while simultaneously discovering, identifying, and soliciting new donors. Oversight of all fundraising activities, including individual and corporate fundraising, trusts, estates and gift planning including a limited number of fundraising events as well as the annual end of year fundraiser.Implement a system of metrics to measure and prove the success of fundraising strategies for department. Establish effective processes and systems for donor stewardship.Effectively serve as the fundraising representative for Unity both internally and externally. Responsible for communicating fundraising priorities, goals, and objectives to fundraising team and other internal stakeholders. Develop budget and performance requirements for fundraising team. Guide fundraising team in the preparation and monitoring of their fundraising plans and prospect management, including revenue forecasts. Provide periodic reports and/or make presentations on fundraising activities and program progress.Work with the VP for Programs and Informatics and other internal stakeholders to identify and prioritize funding needs.Develop the strategy for and direct preparation of gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation materials and stewardship information for both prospects and donors.Strategy oversight and execution by team of all fundraising and stewardship special events.Develop cultivation strategies to support stewardship across all gift levels, including research, and lead small fundraising and/or donor cultivation events. Explore and make recommendations on new opportunities to increase revenue including but not limited to donor advised funds, matching gifts programs, online crowd funding and planned giving opportunities. Manage Unity's workplace giving program including internal and external campaigns (United Way, Combined Federal Campaign, and DC One Fund), including off-site presentations during campaign season.Ensure donors receive acknowledgement in a timely manner.Produce materials and tools that includes but is not limited to appeals, newsletters, and thank you letters.Represent Unity at networking events in order to identify and cultivate prospective donors - note, flexibility is required. Events can occur during early mornings, evenings and weekends.Develop a comprehensive communications strategy that raises brand awareness, increases and strengthens relationships across multiple media platforms.Identifies and identifies solutions to challenging communication issues.Oversee the development of all internal and external communications including annual reports, marketing materials, online communications and social media.MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTSBachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred. A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising with a successful track record and demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategies for increased funding for mission-driven organizations.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREDKnowledge of effective gift fundraising technique and practices.Significant experience in foundation, major and principal gift fundraising.Experience with gift solicitation.Experience and comfort working with an ethnically and culturally diverse population.Self-directed, action-oriented individual who can get things done. Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects, resolve problems and make decisions.A high level of professionalism, compassion, creativity and integrity coupled with an ability to earn the confidence of a wide range of internal and external constituents.Excellent presentation public speaking, verbal communication skills; excellent writing skills.Possession of a supportive and accessible management style, the ability to lead and motivate a diverse staff, and experience in managing change and growth.Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills with internal and external partners.Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and fundraising goals.Ability to travel and availability to perform job-related duties during weekend and evening hours, when necessary.Experience in the development and oversight of budgets.High comfort level with Microsoft Word and Excel, DonorPerfect and/or other database software.SUPERVISORY CONTROLSVP of Communications and Development reports to the Chief Strategy and Development Officer. The Vice President of Communications and Development will supervise the fundraising and communications department staff.
