THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements

Experience
  • Level D
    • Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related field
  • Level C
    • Three (3) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related field
  • Level B
    • Four (4) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related field
  • Level A
    • Five (5) years a Garage Mechanic, or related field
  • Level AA
    • Six (6) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related field
  • Level AA Lead
    • Six (6) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related field

Certification/Licensure
  • Satisfactorily pass all required Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and WMATA certification tests
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements

Preferred
  • Vocational training in basic mechanics or a related field

Mission Essential Designation:
  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Summary

The Heavy Bus Component Over-hauler performs skilled technical vehicle component overhaul work involving troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, and large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) bus fleet.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

"AA Lead" Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

Essential Functions
  • Inspects, diagnoses malfunctions, repairs and installs all vehicle systems and components, (e.g., diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, exhaust systems glass, cameras, brakes, starters.), to ensure vehicles operate safely and meet established industry and Authority safety standards.
  • Uses specialized equipment and tools to perform functional test of mechanical components and systems on vehicles.
  • Attends unit in-service and safety meetings, prepares written materials (i.e. forms, tags, reports) to document vehicle maintenance services and forecast anticipated repairs and/or replacement of vehicles and parts.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance program (e.g., oil change, brake check, etc.) to ensure maximum return on investment of the Authority's vehicle assets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and/or required.
