THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school/training program in auto/diesel maintenance

Experience

Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.
  • Level D
    • Two (2) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level
  • Level C
    • Three (3) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level
  • Level B
    • Four (4) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level
  • Level A
    • Five (5) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level
  • Level AA
    • Six (6) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level
  • Level AAL
    • Six (6) years' experience as a Shop Mechanic or related role and possession of any required certifications for this level

Certification/Licensure
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required with proper Passenger and Air Brakes endorsements

Preferred
  • Completion of acceptable 3 or 4 year bona fide apprenticeship program

Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

Job Summary

The General Transit Bus Shop Mechanic is a skilled technical vehicle maintenance worker responsible for the troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components and chassis and vehicle body repairs for the bus and automotive fleet.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

"AA Lead" Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

Essential Functions
  • Diagnoses vehicle malfunctions (e.g., using computers, analyzers, etc.) to determine necessary vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Inspects assigned vehicles (e.g., brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition) to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition
  • Installs vehicle components, parts, and accessories (e.g., glass, cameras, brakes, starters, and engines).
  • Performs minor body work (e.g., front ends, fenders, and upholstery) to maintain the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance (e.g., oil change, brake check) to maintain safe operating condition of vehicles and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components (e.g., diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, exhaust systems, etc.) to ensure the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
  • Responds to road calls regarding disabled buses, performing emergency repair work in the field.

Other Functions
  • Oversees mechanics and other assigned personnel in the absence of the Shift Supervisor to ensure that assignments are completed in compliance within established guidelines.
  • Performs road checks during inclement weather to ensure safe operation of buses on the roadways.
  • Prepare written materials (e.g., repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims, etc.) to document activities, provide written references, and comply with mandated requirements.
