The Office of Undergraduate Education, within the Office of the Provost, provides over 26,000 undergraduate students with a quality, engaging undergraduate education and gives them the tools to be Engaged Citizens and Well-Rounded Scholars who are Prepared to Act in a Diverse, Global World. Undergraduate Education manages the Undergraduate and Mason Core Curricula, Academic Advising, Fellowships, and Undergraduate Studies. Undergraduate Education supports our Mason Impact activities, including undergraduate research through the Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research, and Civic Engagement through the Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning.Undergraduate Education provides leadership for the university community by:Creating transformational educational programs and initiatives;Building campus and community partnerships;Supporting student academic success;Facilitating Mason Impact activities; andProviding education and support for learning outcomes assessmentThe mission of the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) is to provide leadership for a consistent and quality undergraduate academic experience at George Mason University. The OAA consists of the Director of Undergraduate Student Success, an Assistant Director who manages a team of Exploratory Advisors, and two Advising Coordinators (one technology- and training-focused, and one coordinating pre-health advising). The OAA works collaboratively with academic units through the Academic Advising Liaisons Committee and the Mason Academic Advising Network to provide academic advising to students in programs across Mason, and with the Mason Care Network to provide holistic support for students. The OAA also directly advises exploratory, undeclared, and non-degree students, as well as coordinating pre-professional advising. The OAA collaborates broadly across Mason to support student academic success.About the Position:The Assistant Director (AD) facilitates undergraduate student academic success by coordinating high quality and consistent academic advising services for exploratory, undeclared, and non-degree students. The AD reports to the Director of Student Academic Success in the Office of Academic Advising, and supervises a team of Exploratory Academic Advisors. The AD serves as the primary point of contact for resolving issues related to advising for OAA and the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, including reviewing, preparing, and communicating results of academic actions and appeals. The AD provides leadership for campus-wide academic advising by chairing the university-wide Academic Procedures Advisory Subcommittee (APAC), which consists of advising policy/procedure leadership from each school/college. This group works to ensure University academic policy is interpreted and practiced consistently, and makes recommendations for changes and improvement. The AD is responsible for coordinating academic advisor awards and recognition. The AD collaborates with campus partners, such as the Office of the Registrar and Student Accounts on initiatives that impact students and academic advising, and assists with sharing updates to the academic advising community.Specific Duties include:Manage exploratory academic advising services, including supervision of Exploratory Academic Advisors;Advise a caseload of exploratory, undeclared, and non-degree seeking students as needed;Review academic appeals and exceptions to policy for OAA assigned students;Manage provost-level academic appeals, actions, and complaints in collaboration with the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education;Coordinate academic advisor awards and recognition;Design and implement a first-year advising program, including working collaboratively with Orientation and academic units to provide consistent advising to all students new to Mason;Chair the APAC Subcommittee, and serve on other academic advising and student success related committees as needed; andPerform other duties and projects as assignedRequired Qualifications:A Master's degree in higher education or related field; or equivalent combination of related education and experience;Experience advising undergraduate students (generally 2+ years);Demonstrated commitment to the academic success of diverse students with a focus on inclusive excellence;Experience working collaboratively in a team environment, while also taking initiative in working towards shared goals with minimum supervision;Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students, including strong written and oral communication skills; andKnowledge of academic policies, procedures, and advising in higher education.Preferred Qualifications:Substantial (generally 5+ years) experience advising undergraduate students;Experience in Academic Advising and/or Academic Administration at George Mason University or a comparable university;Experience overseeing, supervising, or managing academic advisor;Experience teaching at the undergraduate level; andMembership in and involvement with NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) or other related association.
