Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a creative, resourceful and sharp assistant editor for Next Generation, a company-wide initiative aimed at helping The Post reach a younger and more diverse audience. This position will work on stories and projects that span the newsroom with a focus on experimentation. The ideal candidate will have insight into coverage areas that are of interest to new audiences.

Working closely with Next Gen's editor, the assistant editor must be comfortable working on several projects at once, and have ideas about trying out new forms of journalism and storytelling. This editor will work with the Next Gen editor and editors and reporters around the newsroom to conceive of stories, formats and lines of reporting that will engage new audiences and be hands-on in the editing, reporting and project managing of experimentation. This role requires an innovative thinker who is excited about connecting Post journalism to new audiences and thrives in a collaborative environment.

  • Assigning and editing stories, both from reporters within the newsroom and Post contributors
  • Thinking strategically about how to reach and grow our relationship with younger and more diverse audiences
  • Working across the newsroom to implement research findings and best practices
  • Willing to experiment with new lines of coverage and approaches to storytelling

  • 3-5+ years of relevant journalism experience
  • Stellar news judgment, a firm grasp of the editorial process and the ability to collaborate and coordinate with multiple teams and departments across The Post's newsroom
  • Strong writing, editing and project management skills
  • A track record of building new products and finding an audience for them
  • Familiarity working on off-platform sites like Instagram, Reddit and TikTok

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

Interested candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter outlining the experience they would bring to the position to our jobs portal.
